after much of a hard life the old R154 is finally starting to whire in third gear when i back off and when im sitting at the lights in neutral. so its time for a rebuild. does anyone know somewhere in brisbane to get it done that wont cost me the price of a new gearbox?

I have no information for you Adrian, but I will probably be in a similar position one day.

Mine is pretty notchy and it would be good to give it an overhaul and change out the thrust washer etc.

New bearings, synchros and seals is around $500 and the labor on top is around $600-$800 due to the amount of time it takes to do a proper rebuild.

A gearbox is a lot more mechanically complicated than an engine so everything takes longer and around a whole day to disassemble, rebuild and reassemble.

Average cost of a rebuild that I do on the R154, with upgraded thrust washer and retainer is around $1500 with new bearings, seals and synchros etc.
