Just out of curiousity, is the w58 gearbox from the jza80 a straight swap into a factory manual tt soarer with minimal fuss?
Or its it not worth the pain and I should just get my r154 reconditioned?

You sure did. An overhaul of the 154 would be around 1.5k, which should yield better returns than swapping a w58 with unknown history in.

I believe a brand new R154 can be purchased for roughly $2000 from Toyota.
