Gday, I've had my v8 for bout 3-4yrs now, and i think its time for a change..
so as the subject suggests, I'm keen to head down this path.
Most of the posts ive looked are are extremely old, and reference places that have since closed down. or they're from people already 3/4's done with their conversion.
Im after anyone who has done this conversion that can give me any tips on what ill need / what they recommend or places to get the stuff for this conversion..
I know this is a big job, and I'm thinking ill definately get it done by a pro, but id like to be able to supply all the necessary parts to keep costs down..

I'm about to go down the same road myself. First do you know what gearbox you'll be using? I'm going to be using an r154 because I've got one is good condition already.

From doing a little bit of reading, a professionally done V8 Manual conversion costs around 5-6k including parts and labor.
And I assume getting all the bits and pieces would be a nightmare because the V8's never came as a manual option, and i think it requires an adapter plate of some sort.

Well mine already has a charger on it and it is a very clean soarer plus I know the history of the car. With the r154 you need all the bits from as if you were doing a manual conv for a tt plus an adaptor plate from rush imports. Prob wouldn't get much change back from 6k. Anyone know how much labour is involved? Is it just the same as job as a tt once all the parts are collected?

Hey, Yeah im considering the R154, or the T56. I know about the adaptor plate, and the tailshaft extension requirements. Im just after some info on gathering all the stuff, and how others have fared while going down the conversion path. Does anyone have a parts list? haha, i could just tick bit by bit of as i collect them.. (dreaming i know)

That's what I'm doing. Think I've got most of the bits now except the adaptor plate. If you go the r154 make sure you get the right one. I think the old supra 7m one is slightly longer or something.

r154 - 1600-200 bellhousing or adaptor - 500 pedals - 250-350 tailshaft mods - 350-500 clutch + flywheel - could be anything really, budget atleast 1k manual surround - not sure on this one, but should be under 200 master cylinder + slave - new from toyota should be 200-350 clutch lines - 200? (unsure on this) conversion cost should be around 1000-1500 dependant on shop, or do it yourself.

Woah, thanks for that post Ali! Verry helpfull indeed!
Just been browsing, seems rush imports do a conversion kit to the t56.. Come with the adaptor, flywheel, shIfter, the shaft joints, and a clutch.. ( not for sale at the moment, although I did read somewhere that they'll be available in the next few months)
So on top of this I'd have to get the trans, clutch master/slaves, clutch lines, and from a wrecked manual soarer the pedals and the manual surround centre console bit..

manual surround - $70 new from toyota
braided flexible clutch line - $45 driftmotion
slave cylinder - $45 driftmotion
honestly have a look at the drift motion web site, he has alot of stuff you'll need on there. i bought some stuff from there, (clutch plate, slave cyl, hose's, bolts) sure express postage was $80 but i saved more then then just on the clutch and it turned up in under a week. and that was from america

Here is my dilemma with my manual conversion:
I have the rush extractors, meaning I have to have a hydraulic release bearing for a slave cylinder. This then results in having to get a master that is 3/4" instead of 5/8" like the factory master cylinders. Then you need the braided line from the master to the release bearing.
Now the bearing depending on what one you get will need to be mounted some way or another so that requires some custom work at the local engineers shop, not to mention getting it in the right position to be able to connect with the pressure plate.
I have'nt looked into it properly but the master reservoir I have is from an Altezza, this will not fit, they look the same as a Soarer but the Soarer one is shorter in length so pays to do your homework on that too.
I would also recommend mounting the pedals and master before doing anything else as the brake pedal from a manual Soarer the hole for the brake master rod is further out than the auto pedal. What I have done is get my auto pedal and cut the pedal foot piece to make it look like a manual pedal as when it comes that time you slam on your brakes you don't want to have anything fail on your brakes as custom modification could be weaker than factory.
If you go with an R154 (like me) you might want to get the box stripped and rebuilt with a aftermarket 1st gear thrust washer as they commonly tend to fail plus when you strip the box down you can inspect it to see how worn parts are and if they need replacing.
That is what I have had to go through so far and my car has now been off the road for over a month when it was only supposed to be a week, the joys of D.I.Y. I plan on having my mate who is a full time mechanic come over on Saturday and hopefully get the car drivable, I live in hope.
