Hi everyone,

I've been having some issues with my soarer v8 (91) gearbox for a while now. it's often sluggish (like it skips second gear) and I put my foot down the other day and it just revved out so its getting worse it seems. Its also displaying the ECT error on the dash with the flashing OD symbol. Does it sound like my gearbox is screwed?
How hard is it to swap out one of these at home? does anyone have a guide? I've got another one lined up if I need it.

Cheers

Have you checked your fluid level?
While running?
I know its a silly question but yould be amazed how many people forget to have car warm and running.

Otherwise it may be a solinoid but I don't know how to test but if you search it it should come up I think

yep i'd check the color and level of your fluid before you do anything drastic like buy another gear box.

also do the gearbox fault code check. pretty sure its in the how to section on the main page

I just checked the levels. some strange results.
- when it was off and cold it was about an inch above the end of the T in HOT.
- when is was warm and running it was about 1cm about the L in COOL.
- when it was off and warm it was around on HOT.
do you think it's more likely to be the fluid levels or solinoids rather than a screwed gearbox?

You need to have car running to check fluid level. And then fill to meet level on dipstick. Sounds low to me.
Was the fluid warm? Or just car?
Run car go for a drive come back leave car running and check level. Feel fluid on stick as well. You can get car warm but transmission will be cold still.
What colour is the fluid? Black? Red? Brown?

daniels on the money. get the car up to OPERATING TEMPERATURE.... which is normally mid way up the temp gauge.

then leave the car running. pop the bonnet and check the fluid. wipe it off and check it again. it should be somewhere in between the "hot" mark.

the fluid should be a nice red color.

do this and then post the results. if your still unsure YOUTUBE it, i bet there's about 1000 videos out there on "how to check automatic transmission fluid"

I think the first thing you should do before any of these things is Check the Error codes, since your getting the ECT light and O/D OFF Flashing which indicates an error.

Fix the cause of the error, then it's Fixed.

I had a similar problem with my gearbox skipping second gear. After you have checked the above, try switching out the ECU. That what was causing my issue.

get the fluid level correct, reset the ECU then check what the error codes are if you still get them

that means you were in diagnostic mode you just need to press the scroll button and it then should come up with efi and either ng or ok and if you press it again you will get ect and the same either ng or ok if you get an ng then wait on that one and the codes should appear.

cheers matt

while doing the diagnostics the error codes point to solenoid no. 2. but... Immediately after doing the diagnostics and starting the car the "alternator not charging battery" error and cat light are staying on all the time. ugh... one thing after another
