Evening everyone,
While its probably a really stupid question, just after a few explanations on what effect overdrive (on/off) have on the car, and what effect having the ect power switch has on?
How does everyone else drive their cars in relation to these things?

Overdrive is pretty much forth gear. turn it off and it wont select forth gear. ECT holds the gears longer between shifts and stiffens up the suspension if you have TEMS.

OD=on adds a 4th gear. Use as you like.
ECT=Power supposedly raises the gear shift points a little except at WOT. Most notably though, it allows you to lock into 2nd and it won't drop back to first - great for powering through the twisties when you don't want it jumping back to first half way through a corner.

Since I have heard of this I have tested EVERY Soarer I have driven (and I regularly get to drive a few). In EVERY case if power button is on and shift lever in 2nd the car WILL shift back to 1st. You pussies just don't hit it hard enough, and you do really have to try!

I was under the assumption that setting the ect to power and putting the car into 2nd was what they termed 'Snow mode' to assist in pulling away in slippery conditions.

The factory specs give info on holding gears. They will not change up when held in gear but will change down in any combination. With power switch on it is a lot harder but will change down. Some cars i've driven did not do it but after an ECU reset and a bit of "normal" driving they did. Remember, this is a function of the ECU as well and these ECUs can do some strange stuff.
