Not sure if its just mine but shifting is a bit of an effort especially snapping 2nd. Any help? Don't even bother saying swap to auto!

I concur with the above. They are not a nice cruiser box. Very different to the rest of a Soarer. My opinion is that is why toyota made manuals are rare in production

That's the sole reason why I don't want to put a R154 in my Soarer. I would happily install a W58 but I've got Rush headers in mine, which prevent a W58 from being installed (without a lot of hassle I'm led to believe). Asides from the T56 conversion, I'd love to know if there is another, smooth, manual tranmission that can be fitted with Rush headers in place. What are the Supra 6 speed Getrags like? |

Would it be worthwhile checking out the shifter bushes? If they're old and worn then you could be getting a lot of slop that makes it hard to shift especially 1-2 and any cross-gate shifts (2-3, 4-5 etc) That being said, the R-series _is_ a truck gearbox (they use them in Hiluxes) so it'll never be buttery smooth, but I'm perfectly happy with it (and gives me some confidence that it can stand up to a pounding from a worked turbo motor)

if the gear teeth a worn, and the bearings and bushes have copped 15 years of abuse (which most have) no amount of oil or additives are going to smoothen your shift. i saw a brand new R154 for sale somewhere on here, i'd love to feel how that shifts compared to an older one

I didn't mean to down talk the box. I still love my r154 and how strong it is unlike the w58. I've heard the getrag 6 speed feels worse

I think the r154 is fine. Mine has about 100,000km in a chaser. Little bit of whine but pretty normal for its age.

Getrag isnt bad, just a lit bit more noisy. Transmission today are MUCH better at shifting, but there arent many that can match the strength of the v16x or r154 (with thrust washer replaced). Getrags are fairly cheap now..definitely a feasible option Lightweight shock proof works amazing for some people and causes synchro glazing on others..bit of a mixed bag really.

I have the R154 in mine, was always crappy shift. Got it pulled down, upgraded the thrust washer and bearing retainer and lapped all the synchros, replaced main bearings and seals. I talked to a quite a few gearbox guys that know the 154 inside out and all of them recommended the Castrol VMX 80 and to change it regularly. Still shifts like crap, but I know it will take whatever I can throw at it! The diff on the other hand............

I have had good results with the Redline MT-90. Beforehand, my R-154 was very stiff going into 1st and second. After running the MT-90 for a few thousand km's it has been much better. Also, make sure your engine and transmission mounts are in good condition. I had mine replaced today and the gearbox is much smoother to operate now.
