I suppose it could be a torque converter issue ?? but firstly what is the idle speed at when you put it into drive as if the idle is very low already & your IAC isn't working it could stall & does it stall in reverse too .. So can you drive it at all ?? what's it like if you roll it down the road & then put it in drive ..
Would pay to get it checked out before you start putting in another Auto ..
If it turns out to be the auto at fault you will need to be looking for a complete auto or at least another Torque converter, unless someone has wired up the lock up torque converter permanently on ?? ..

If its the auto its a pretty big job. Might as well do the rear main at the same time. Or even consider manual conversion while you are at it if you are so inclined. That's what I'm waiting for. Once my auto throws in the towel r154 goes in its place.

I should have added too that if your tools & mechanical skill is limited, in my opinion you would be better off paying someone to do the work for you, its not too hard but certainly labour consuming & you will need good jacks & stands & good tools & mates to help etc as its very heavy & cumbersome if you decide to do it with mates & if no one has done it before or wants to help then definitely don't try it ...
And as Scott said a good tested S/hand one should only be around a few hundred ..
Thanks for the advise guys. Yes I wouldn't mind a manual, who wouldn't, but it's just too expensive for the conversion and I can't justify it when the auto box (when working) it is quite good.
I suppose if I was younger, I could round up my mates to help do a swap, but now everyone in their 40's who would want to get under a car and get dirty? I think the best and easiest way would be to let the professionals do this.
Anyway first thing is first. I will check those things Robert advised, then I hope I would have a better understanding of which way I need to turn.
By the way I also have 2 soarers now, my aim is to make one great soarer, by swapping the better parts, then sell/part out the other one.
Only problem is, my first one also has a gearbox issue as not shifting properly. I recently changed the No 2 solenoid and it was great for a bout a week or so, then reverted back to shifting from 1st to 4th. Thing is, once the car warms up to the proper operating temperature, it fixes itself and shifts brilliantly. However once it cools down, same thing.
That's why I was asking about another gearbox, but will see after I have a better look and will let you know.

Hey Harry,
You mention the RPM when cold what RPM is it sitting at when warm ?? ..
The next step is put your left foot on the brake & with your right foot hold the RPM at about 1000 & then put it into gear without taking your foot off the accelerator & does it stall then ??
Ok guys, all sorted. I swapped over my computer and worked a treat. So it is the computer. Looks very original, doesn't seem that it has ever been recapped. Makes sense I guess.
I'm surprised too, I didn't expect it, but I thought I have my ECU from my other car, only takes a bit to disconnect and it ran fine. I drove it for about half an hour and it didn't miss a beat.

So if you plug the bad ecu into the other car it has a stalling issue? Yes quite surprising but is good info because if I come across this it is much easier to try a new ecu them drop the auto.

Oh so you are the one that makes the overlays! I didn't know, but thanks. I'm having trouble working the EMV, (first time user) and I'm sure these overlays will be of a big help.
For the record!!! I have now tested the bad ECU to my other Soarer and I can confirm, it did the same thing. So it was definitely the ECU causing the car to stall.

Thanks Mike for your response. Now I know where I can get help. I will pull out my ECU in the next few days to get the exact model then I will get in touch with you. My problem is I need to be sure that it is the ECU that is playing up before I spend hundreds of dollars. Pity I cannot get hold of another ECU to test if this is indeed the problem.

If you get stuck you can open the unit up and take a bunch of high res photos with a bright light and email them to me, I can assess the photos and possibly see what is going on.
