Hey guys, Just wondering whether I can use any type of t56 gearbox for a conversion or whether I have to use a specific type eg. Holden, ford etc. Cheers!

needs to be a holden one, cant remember the exact year/model, you can also use the magnum just have to machine a couple of grooves into the adapter plate, second hand box $1500-$2000, brand new magnum from dellow etc about $3200, removes any risk of getting a dud second hand one

HI Andrew, I'm in the exact same process but can't find an adapter plate, the only thing currently available is the dellow bell-housing for $660. What are u planning to use and any idea where to get the adapter plates from? Cheers Andy

Nah Laurence mentioned he had the CAD file and said he can get them made up as he's doing my whole conversion, but I've just realised that you have a 1jz and the plates being made are for 1uz

How much does the whole thing cost in parts and how much in labour?

i sourced my own t56 box for $1200, got manual soarer pedals and master cylinder off here from Lew Radbourn for $200. Brintech supplying t56 adapter plate for $450, manual flywheel $390, clutch kit $650, spigot bearing $25 then around $2000-2500 labour so worst case total is... $5415 only lose the car for a weekend I highly recommend Brintech for the job, they have done this conversion many times, not always in a soarer though haha!

In Sydney? I've got a r154 but I'm wondering if the t56 is better and/or cheaper if I sell my r154.

Yeah in sydney, unit 42 / 20 Tucks Rd Seven Hills to be exact Well neil griffiths recommends the t56 and it is built like a brick sh.ithouse to deal with holden ss power, let an auto 1j have the r154 and convert to 6 speed t56 ;)

The 6th gear over drive is appealing...

Well r154 are rarer to come by and t56's are easy to find so I reckon you'd get a fair amount for your r154 Yeah thats what won me over in the end

Scott unless you are blowing it up the R154 shifts better then a T(ruck)56

GM products are known for refinement the R154 is no work of art but compared to a T56 if strength is a not an issue I know what I would have!

It pretty much comes down to wanting a sixth gear, or going crazy with torque and power as to which one you choose If you've already got the r154 id say stick with it as you could wait for a while to find a decent cheap t56

The newer TR6060 is a much nicer box if you can afford it.

How much are TR6060s? I think now you can almost afford to go with v161. Theres a swap in Supra forums for $4k. Obviously you will need the big diff as well so add in another k.

I see Castlemaine Rod shop do an adaptor plate for the T56 to V8 auto bell housing, and the six cyl as well.
