I have a factory R154 in my Soarer and I'm getting some strange noises from my transmission that at first I thought were normal, but now I'm not so sure - hoping someone here might be able to provide some insight.

I can produce this repeatedly by putting the transmission in reverse, driving in reverse while feathering the clutch, but when I depress the clutch to put it into neutral I get a loud "bang" that sounds like it's coming from the bell housing area when the clutch disengages. I can feel it in the shifter, it almost feels like the transmission/drivetrain jolts when the drive train unloads (almost sounds like the clutch aggressively disengaging). It also happens when driving slowly in first and depressing the clutch to come to a stop. I don't get any bangs when letting off the throttle while moving, shifting in higher gears or when releasing the clutch.

I'm not sure what clutch or flywheel is in this vehicle and I do plan on replacing those as well as rebuilding the gearbox (synchro issues with 2nd) but has anybody experienced this before? Last time I was under the car I had a look for any excessive freeplay in the rear driveshafts, diff mounts and tailshaft but they seemed ok.

It could be wear in the pivot point on the clutch fork or something..

Mine was pretty badly worn when I did the clutch, so I replaced it.. I think you can do it without removing anything...

What kind of symptoms did you get with that worn out? Is there any way of checking without removing the box?

There’s an inspection cover on the passenger side of the bellhousing that you’ll be able to remove to get a good look at it. Does it happen with the car off? Or only when driving?

Only when driving and only when either reversing and pushing the clutch pedal in to come to a stop or while moving in 1st and depressing the clutch (sounds worse in reverse). The sound happens as soon as the clutch is disengaged and you can feel it in the driveline

I have similar issue, it makes a weird clacking noise as well when clutch is half way engaged, ie in reverse
