One day I entered my V8 as usual, put the key in, started up the engine, put my foot on the brake and went to move the gear stick to 'D'. But alas, the gear stick didn't move. I now have to use the good old red button each time I want to get out of 'P'. This issue has probably been raised a couple of times but I didn't find any evidence of it through the Search feature.

Possibly a brake light problem, blown globe or corroded socket. All these things seem to be connected together. Check your fuses as well.

The shift lock module gets power from three fuses;
Cigarette lighter
Stop lamps (after the brake switch)
Battery

All are 15A fuses.
Blown brake bulbs won't affect its' operation but a blown brake fuse will as will either of the others.
There is a switch and a solenoid connected to the module as well. Either could be sticky or otherwise faulty.
The final part is the Ignition switch which could have a faulty lock solenoid.

Or if you have an after market gear stick it could have moved slightly. That will do it as well.

Mark, if I have a blown brake fuse does that mean my brake lights will not come on when I step on the brakes?

Yes but that's only oner of the three fuses.
If cig lighter fuse is blown A/C controls and bottom half of dash won't work. Dunno 'bout the other one.
