Damian, could lead to all sorts of problems if the oil has been cooked too much....
It could be thicker with all the sludge buildup, not thinner. The metal filings from meshing gears could become very abrasive, which is the opposite effect that oil should have.
For a small amount of money, you could fix all that.

I will change the fluid when it is due.
I was just thinking out loud as my bros VS commodoore had a strangely very large effect once oil was changed, it was very different to drive and very slow changing.

Slow changing or you just didn't feel the shift shock?
I pulled the pan off my VP and found pieces of clutch material in the sump and filter. The fluid hadn't been changed until 150 000km. Gearbox was a quieter after a flush and the shift shock was lessened but still apparant. No fix for that one with swapping or overhauling the worn/shattered clutch packs.
