Hey guys,

anyone ever tried launching in 2nd gear?

My diff gears are very short and I think it is a contributing factor to my mega lag in 1st. 2nd gear in a340e is nearly the same ratio as 1st in powerglide

If so, how did it go? Box hold up? trans temp? any signs of wear?

You're not going to be able to do it without some sort of aftermarket controller for the auto. If locked in 2nd the factory controlled auto WILL go back to 1st if punched hard enough and the whole point is that you will be punching it hard..

And for all those who are going to say it doesn't I say "prove it!" 'cos you can't.

In particular page AT40 of the last doc.
This doc is for the A340E transmission fitted to the 7MGTE but I can assure you that the Soarer auto specs are the same (I have that doc but it is too big to upload and i can't find a link to it).

Proof enough yet? or do I have to go further????

I have no problem locking it in 2nd as I have a MV autos shift box so it is fully manualised now.

So only people who have manualised their autos can do this then hey. I suppose I will just have to see next time I hit the strip.

Dragan: I have heard of that method before and not surprisingly the box was stuffed pretty quick. A guy with a single turbo 1jz in a cressi with a 100hp N20 for spool use to do it and his car did wheelstands and ran low 11's!

Hey Chris is the manualisation option from MV something that could be turned on and off in the cabin with a flick of a switch? I'm thinking it might be a cheaper option instead of buying in a powertrain auto ecu from the states.

Have a look at that Ben. I am certainly no electronics guru but I suppose it could be done somehow.

Problem is that when you cut power to the box usually and the car is in D it will be in 4th. If there is no power to the box at all and you shift manually L,2,D it will go 1,3,4.

I have wired my OD in to the negative to the shift box so it should be all good now. Although haven't been able to check it as car doesn't start now. Microtech time for me I think.

We argue about it. Some of us can't get it to jump back to first, others say they can and that we aren't hoofing hard enough. I don't know about that, nowhere for the pedal to go once it's pushed to the front bumper bar.

put your car on a steep hill and try it. Im sure it will almost stall if it stays in 2nd, and i dont think the computer will let it stall, therefore jump back to 1st

There is no condition in the logic of the factory ECT control that will allow the transmission to stay locked in ANY gear if the control logic deems it unsafe for the engine or the gearbox.

and before anyone says "but it will stay locked in 1st", it will in nearly all cases. But if there is a fault such as, say, the rev limiter failing then the logic will shift the 'box up to 2nd to protect the engine.
