Does the torque converter solenoid need to be pulsed or is is continuously on with 12V when engaged by the ECU?

Good question. Could be either. I've never had to check. Multimeter and/or CRO will tell you.

I have mine manualised on a switch and I have constant 12v. For the couple of times I have driven it since, it seems to work fine :-)

hey chris, does it tend to make the car feel more jerky when on and off the throttle like a manual does?

Was trying to avoid having a cro on it as I'd have to jack up the back wheels and have them spinning to look at the lockup signal.

Chris,

Did you connect one side of the switch to ground and the other to the solenoid or do you switch 12V onto the solenoid?

I think I ran 12v into 1 side of the switch and the other side of switch to lockup solenoid :-)

Which pin on the ecu corresponds to the lockup solenoid?

Want to wire in a manual lockup for the dyno while I'm installing the SMT6.

Thanks.

Don't know pinouts. But get this wiring diagram and have a look. AFAIK it comes from the back of the gearbox (closer to the rear of car). Last paragraph.

How to install MV automatics manaulising shift box for Toyota A340e automatic

I have a jzx90 Chaser 1jz-gte and automatic in my car. It uses the whole Chaser loom and dash. Because of this I cannot simply chop the old wires off and connect them to the shift box instead. If I did this, I would lose my gear indicators on the dash.

Firstly, to do this you will need a wiring diagram. I got mine from
http://www.1jz-gte.us/documents/SubDocs1/1JZWiringECT.pdf. The main pages to start with are pages 5 & 6 as these show the wiring for the shifter.

Find plug A (which comes from the shifter, over the gearbox and to the passenger side) and get a shift light and test which wire is which. On my car it goes like this
1 Park green
2 Drive brown
3 Second peach
4 Low yellow
5 Power black
6 Nuetral pink

I need to splice into 2,3 & 4 and wire them into the supplied plug. You will receive instructions that look like this

So that is the input side of the shifting sorted. Next is the output side.

The automatic gearbox shifts using 2 solenoids. Which gear is selected depends on which solenoids are receiving power. (http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/library/TSRM/at/AT_012.html see table 2 for more information) These wires come from the tailshaft end of the gearbox and are black, white and yellow. You have to find plug “I” and cut the black and white wires. The black wire is Solenoid A and the white wire is solenoid B. These are not spliced in as we don’t want the stock ecu sending signals to these. These 2 wires are then plugged into the shift box as indicated in the instructions.

Finally, we must connect the power and ground to the shift box. The power should have a 10amp fuse on it and it should pass through the OD switch. This is because when the OD switch is switched on, it will cut power to the shift box and therefore the solenoids and when the solenoids are not powered, 4th gear is selected.

The other solenoid in the gearbox is used to control the lockup function. This is normally switched on when you are up to cruise speed and under light load. We can also wire this to a button so that we can manually activate it. This can cause damage to the gearbox under WOT so be careful. This effectively reduces the amount of energy wasted in the automatic and puts more power to the wheels. Just like fixing a slightly slipping clutch in a manual. To do this we can get the yellow wire from the “I” plug and run it to a button. This button should be a pop in pop out style not one that you have to hold down (Like the power button in my car). I recommend a button because if you forget to turn the lockup off the car will stall when you slow down. (Just like stopping in a manual without putting the clutch in).

And that is how we install the shift box.

And sometimes you may need relay connected to the shift box to completely remove power(+) or else you won’t get 4th gear (O/D)

Lovely work Chris, well done

Thanks mate :-)

That is something I have yet to change actually. I will have to do it. When I wired the positive wire to the shift box through the o/d switch it blew a fuse. (don’t know which one but dash didn’t work) So in the end I used the negative to the shift box and sent that through the o/d switch.

After installing it, you have to be careful when testing to make sure that it is selecting the right gears. If there is no power to the shift box for the whole time it will shift 1-3-4 and o/d won’t do anything when you turn it on. This can fry the box if you are hammering it so have to be careful testing.

My negative is also going through my OD switch, But I had a problem with 4th gear and it ending up being left over voltage and wouldn’t select for 5 seconds or not at all.

Solenoids run on 12v, but they also continue working with only 1 volt, once the relay was connected, she instantaneously shifted hard and fast

so you have a relay on your negative wire going through OD switch then?

I haven't fully tested mine yet as I installed it and then attempted to wire the wolf 3d properly. Didn't work. Bought microtech and have been waiting for it to arrive ever since.

Not on the negative side Chris, 12V input side mate. my negative closes the circuit & opens from the OD

Edit: Both +/-

Thanks for the refresher Ronny. Forgot all about this thread.

As you can probably tell I am an electrical noob.

So, if I have a direct ground and I have a switched positive wire into the shift box how should I wire the relay in?

Thanks heaps!!!!!
