Hi guys,

I did some research via this means and i ended up heading out to my local wreckers and picking up a transmission cooler from a Mitsubishi Magna. Its in pretty good nick and i also got a EL falcon Jack and tyre changin gear for only $25 total.

anyways, again been doin some searching through the forums and i see that to install it people say to go from the Tranny to radiator - cooler - tranny. BUT im thinkin about bypassing the radiator all together as thats what many cabs do so it keeps the coolant well and truly clear from the trans fluid.

So i ask, is there any dramas doin this or should i just stick to what has been said?

I plan on doin this job in the next couple of days and then getting a transmission serivce / flush next week.

any tips would be appreciated including mounting positions with pics if possible.

Cheers again !

James, preferred setup would be tranny, cooler, radiator, tranny. This allows the radiator to help bring the oil up to operating temperature faster and stops the oil getting too cold eg when just cruising on cold nights.

I have no idea what cabs do or why, but the fluids never mix and possibly it's factored in that cabs pretty much don't go cruising.

James if your were living in the southern states, I'd agree with Peter. I had the same connections as he mentioned. I've recently re-routed the pipes: Tranny-->radiator-->cooler-->tranny. My reason for doing it was that the cooler in its original connection was still too hot to touch after a 80km cruise on the highway on a 25 degree morning.

Try it either way. It's easy to change (15 minutes including jacking up the car) if your fluid is still cooking or you get rough shifts if too cold.

If the fluid gets too cold, the torque converter won't lock up until the fluid reached the correct temperature. I'm not sure of the actual temp.

Not sure that too hot to touch is a worry though.

James , just remember the original route thru the radiator is to cool the tranny fluid , not "bring it up to temp". The slippage in the trans will warm up the fluid much quicker than the rad water. The cooler the trans fluid runs the better. I'm sure you could never "over cool it" with an after market cooler. So having the tranny cooler & radiator in series will do the best job, I don't think the order of connection would make any measurable difference.

I have 2 coolers and neither go through the radiator. Does an awesome job of cooling but does take a while to warm up. Don't really care though as the car is a weekender. Sits on 160F most of the time and has gotten up to 180F after 45mins on the highway. Still have stock stall in there at the moment so I suspect I will be making full use of my trans coolers once I get my 4000rpm stall in :-)

Chris, what size coolers are you using? Are they the magna coolers? I don't get anywhere near this cool with my radiator and cooler combo. Im running a "high efficiency" B&M cooler off a VP commodore.

One is a Magna cooler and the other came with the car but I think is a commo cooler. I reckon, you will definitely be cooler without using the radiator. The sacrifice is longer warm up times. I don't really think the radiator part of it calls it at all, gets it up to temp quicker and then probably doesn't do much. It is pretty small with little air reaching it in my car. Reason I never put it through there was because I needed special fittings and it was easier to install bigger coolers.

If your are running a thermostat anywhere from 76Degrees up to 92, then the coolant after it has passed through the radiator will be lower than that. Therefor the temperature of the transmission fluid inside the factory cooler in the radiator, should be getting cooled as im sure it is hotter than the above temps once it hits the factory cooler.

Im guessing its handy for shorter warm up periods, and im certain it does keep temps down, moreso than with no cooler.

STandard boxes running standard converters wont really need an aftermarket cooler, in my opinion anyways. Mainly used for extreme driving conditions and towing.

But if your looking at changing stall speed and running in lots of track days, then for sure, fit an aftermarket cooler, as Stall converters are the main thing that really heats up fluid!

Shift kit dosn't take long to install if you have a hoist. 45 minutes max. If the pan gets too distorted when prying it off, you may need a cork gasket to seal it. I didn't have too much luck using silicon gasket sealant myself.

Alternately, use wire to separate the pan from the box. Shoudn't distort at all this way.

Sorry to Hikack this thread a little, but I have roughly 230rwkw and a stage 1.5 shift kit.
So far I've had no problems with my gearbox, but I keep getting told I should have at least 1 transmission cooler on it. It has a stock stall etc so I haven't really been worried about temps.
My friend on the other hand has the same setup as me, has a transmission cooler, and has destroyed 2 gearboxes so far.

Question is, do I really need one yet? Or should I wait till I get the high stall?

Depends how you drive it. If you flog it daily then a cooler would be a very good idea.

personally for the price of a cooler I would definitely do it. $25 and some pipe and an hour or so will do it. I don't see why anyone wouldn't have one with a modded car.

The stock cooler does a good job. Its only when you start upping the stall (and slippage increases) that you should be worried, Paul..

...so i hear anyway >.>

A kit is around $160 (from MV Automatics) i think. Just add it in series to the old one, put the new one before the stock one.

If you have an aftermarket IC you could slot it up in the stock IC's house.
