Hey Guys,
I have been exploring off the shelf products for the V8 and found lots of interesting things. I just finished making (hand made, but will cnc soon) an adaptor plate with the help of Rod (Zuffen) to mate with the GM TH400 3 speed transmission. The total cost is about $2,000 USD for have a transmission able to handle 1,500 hp. This plate also work with other GM transmissions and manual too. http://www.lextreme.com/th400.html My next step is to modify the GM yoke with Lexus/Toyota yoke and after that, transmission mount. Please let me know what you think.

David, what about a beefed up TH350, orTH700 so you can keep the overdrive(TH700only). A lot lighter and smaller than the 400. I had a Z28 with a TH350 that I beefed up, and it was good to drive. I know you are talking big HP compared with the Z28, but the tunnel room maybe an issue with the 400.

Hi Ted,
This adaptor will work on pretty much any GM transmission. Depending on application, you use the 200 or the 700 with overdrive or even the T56 6 speed transmission. I chose TH400 because of my application. However, for daily/strip you can use the 700 with electronic speend sensor. I am also working on the T56 (if money allow) with a complete clutch system. I also plan to CNC the plate so it will look alot better.

As usual, great work David.
To put this into perspective though, the GM trannies are probably well suited for dedicated drag strip work in extremely high power vehicles aiming for sub 10 second passes, but for daily driver/occasional strip work however, the Toyota A340/A341 tranny when adequately beefed up by MV Autos has been shown to handle 10 second passes without issue and retain the factory shifting intelligence they are known for.

Emanuel,
Thank you for your kind words. You are absolutely right about the daily driver/occasional trip. Matter of fact, I am seriously thinking about the T56 too. The Viper version is rated at 650 ft/lb torque vs. V160 is rated at 361 ft/lbs torque. I think this adaptor plate open up many options of gears, transmission applications and so on. I will be running around 1000 hp http://www.lextreme.com/1uzfe.html So with this built TH400 would able to handle it.
As u guys know I am running about 14.7 to 16.68 psi in my LS400. I broke two transmissions (A341E) in four months and everytime i replace it my wallet hurts really bad. As for my LS400, a 200R4 or the 700-4R would work well. Both of the transmission above have overdrive.
