ask Aunty Neil he uses penrite or penzoil synthetic in his v8.

typeiv is not the only oil that can be used,

synthetic is way better in temp handling and longevity.yes its dearer but why crimp on $$

I think Neil only suggests synthetic for a V8 with a shift kit. Otherwise, Type IV.

V8 No Shift Kit = Type IV
V8 Shift Kit = Type IV or Dex 3
V8 Shift Kit & Stally = Dex 3 or Full Syn
V8 Shift Kit & Stally doing Drags / Track Etc = Full Syn
V8 Shift Kit & Stally & Blower = Full Syn

TT is Dex 3
And Full Syn for Kit & Stally (As applied to the V8)

ANY TT or V8 with a Stally should also run a Cooler.

My preferance is Penrite Full Syn ATF

Please Cut & Paste this..I wont type it again :-)

Does installing a shift kit put less heat stress on the transmission fluid?

The reason I ask is that Neil suggests Dex3 as suitable once a shift kit is installed.

The reason for the ability to use Dex 3 is because the additives dont apply as much with no clutch slippage for gear changes.

OT but WTF...

Castrol Transmax Z is also ideal for the Getrag V160 or V161/Supra 6 speed gearbox
- same stuff as Toyota repackages for the 6 speed but only half the price :-)

Apologies for the ancient thread revival, but what are you referring to when you say a "shift kit"? shims put in the box to make it shift quicker?

If you get an MV shift kit, it has the box pressure adjusted for greater gear clamping force and a different accumulator spring for quicker changes.

There is also a DIY mod available. The link was posted up as "UK auto mod" or something like that.

As far as fluid goes, Dexron III will still burn with a shift kit, but not as quick. After 7000km with the shift kit and hard driving, mine has started to darken and smell.

Will try type IV again next time I flush it to see if it burns. Transmax Z is a bit on the expensive side for me.

Think I will just stick with the type IV Mr T intended.
Cheers for the reply Anish
