Hi, I recently (about 6 weeks ago) had a 100k service where the Trans fluid was topped up. I have noticed a pool of fluid about 6 cm on the driveway in the morning. I checked the level about an hour after stopping and the level was above the hot mark (yes I did it with the engine running). It may have been over filled and my questions are would this cause the leakage? Could it be a rear seal and what is the cost to replace?

If it were a rear seal you'd be seeing smoke coming up from under the doors and through the bonnet and it would be a very smelly affair !!!
..... hmmmmm, reminds of a Woman I once ahhh never mind ........
... sounds more like the natural occurrence of an overzealous 'top-up'. The extra fluid will spurt out of the overflow tube and cause you embarrassment 'till you let some out of the Sump

Sure it was transmission fluid and not engine oil? V8 blow rear mains seals at around this milage.
Overfilling will cause a leak if it's very over full and you go for a hard drive. There's a breather on the top of the transmission. If it's overfull, it the fluid could have expanded and come out of the top. I've had an extra 1L in mine before without problems.

It is definitely Transmission fluid. Thanks for your comments I think it might be over full as I see that the invoice I have says they put 1.5 litres in it or that's what they charged me for. I might dump some out and see if that stops it. Thanks Rob

My experience is, that if it is a tranny fluid overfill, then it will overflow when driving and get splattered all over your exhaust and under the car - not pretty. When this happened to me, there was no dripping while parked to give it away, I was only alerted by a driver behind me saying that the car occasionally puffed smoke on the trip back from Canberra - the tranny oil hitting the hot exhaust pipes.
When my rear engine seal started to leak however, no smoke, just some drips on the driveway after a bit of a run.
If they serviced the tranny at the same time, they would have used more than 1.5 litres, but may not have sealed the tranny cover properly.

Well I thought I would just let you know that I discovered where the leaks are. I finally got it up on a hoist and discovered 2 leaks. One from the trans pan and the other from the power steering pump. The power steering pump wasn't noticeable from the top as there is a split in the under tray so it was not pooling but dropping straight out on to the road. I'm getting them fixed next week. Hopefully there is no damage to the alternator, as it was reconditioned 9 months ago. The usual story nothing that money won't fix.
