Forgot to mention, 4.8L in the sump, ie, drain the sump and refill. The whole tranny holds around 12L. You'd have to pull the cooler line and pump it out if you want to change all 12L.

Type4 in mine. With a shift kit. Hasnt skipped a beat!
I think its just the gearboxes on the v8's that get all upset if you dont use Dexron3?
One handy thing my mechanic does for me as part of my service is drop the pan on the gearbox and let it drain out. Usually empties about ~2L worth. Top it back up again and good to go! If you do that 4 times a year with your servicing then it should always be in a good fresh level! =P

The small black valve that fell out when I installed my shift kit must have been an anti drain back valve if I'm getting almost 5L by draining the sump.
Not too worry. Michael from MV didn't think it was important to put it back.

I had dexron III put in my non turbo transmission but I think the changes have become a bit less smooth. Does anyone know if it's better to use toyota type IV instead of dexron III for the non-turbo JZZ31?

I ended up using TQ DEX III as the local toyota said they use it.
Their toyota manuals also had my car and almost all of similar vintage as mine where listed as TQ DEX III.
Since flushed I haven't had any problems, I wouldn't be suprised if toyota buys the fluid of one of the manufactures instead of manufacturing it themselves.

You're probably right on Toyota buying the fluid from someone else but it's been made to the T-IV spec. Michael recons is has some additives in it to allow it to survive the additional heat generated by the "slip controlled lockup" of the torque converter and gears in a stock gearbox.
If you take a wiff of the T-IV you'll notice it dosn't have the mineral oil stink to it like Dexron fluids. Wouldn't be supprised if it's part synthetic.
