This has been annoying me for a while, so thought it's about time that I posted it up.

My air-con works perfectly fine and cools/heats as it should. However I have noticed a slight "wooooooo" noise when the car is in drive. I have also noticed that if I take my foot off the accelerator the noise seems to disappear.

To check if this was actually the air-con, I turned off the air-con and the noise disappears. Turn it on and you can hear it again. It's in the background and just audible enough to annoy me. It seems to happen with any setting where the a/c is set to 24 degrees or lower.

Another thing is that I have noticed that sometimes on the outside of the car I can hear a clatter noise every now and then. Would this be bearing related?

I'll bet the Clatter is one of those bastard brake dust covers which live over the front disks.
Bend 'em both back a little and see if that helps.

Dunno about the 'wooooooo' noise though !!!!!!

Are all your vents open?
Mine makes a noise when not all the vents are open and it is quite annoying!

All the vents are open. It's not an inside noise and is definately coming from the engine. It's as though when revving the engine it kind of seem to strain the a/c when it is on and cooling.

The clatter noise happens now and then whenever the a/c kicks in.

I am suprised this hasn't been said yet...

If it's only happening when the setting is UNDER 24 degrees, there is a good chance this is the threashold where the A/C compressor is kicking in to cool the air, and anything ABOVE 24 degrees, the A/C compressor is not required, therefore doesn't kick in.

This would be logical if the wooooing noise is said to be coming from under the bonnet, and not inside the cabin.

Something I have noticed as well on mine is fan speed seems to be effected by the speed of the engine.

It doesn't bother me, but I do notice the fan speed slow slightly when pulling up at traffic lights, and I also notice it blast again after I take off.

It sounds like a bearing on the Compressor itself to me and regarding the fan slowing at traffic lights, have you checked your earthing points?

WILL....just a shot in the dark try removing aircon belt and reverse it ...but the clatter sounds like it could be elec clutch??? maybe the fan speed is the volt drop at tick over

I think Dave is on the right track. Try some rubber grease (the red stuff - Repco) on both sides of the AC belt. Don't use anything else as it wont work and will probably stuff the belt. Rub a decent 10 cm smear over a few spots and very briefly turn the engine over four or five times without starting it to distribute the rubber grease around the belt. I have seen this "cure" a compressor that I'd have sworn was stuffed and on other 1UZFE's fix moans and funny noises. For some reason the ac belt when it's dry can make a real racket under load. It will need doing every 10-15,000 kms. This trick also works on some front loading washing machines!

I'd recommend it, it takes about 3 minutes once you have the rubber grease and it's an instant fix if that's the problem. I would not have believed it was the belt making the noise until a friend who's a Lexus service manager showed me. The belt had been replaced about 15K prior and looked like new.

It sounded exactly (to me, + a local experienced Soarer mechanic and another auto electrician) like a compressor about to die. I had tried to order one except there are none in Japan for late 95 UZZ32's. We had changed bearings and listened with stethoscopes and "proven" to ourselves it was the compressor! Now it is so quiet I can't tell if the AC is on or off whereas before It was much louder than the engine.

It saved me $1000, let us know how you go.

Roger,
Wait till you have a Blower on there :-)

It stretches the belt about every 6 months, and sounds like a bearing is about to freeze on ya..hahahah

Neil

That would sound expensive, and major grief to replace if it was the bearing. I guess given the blower can load the belt about 10 times as much as an ac compressor six months is doing well. Have you ever seen the bearings on the little Toyota superchargers on JDM MR2's. I think it was a 4AGZE, you have to shatter a plastic bit to get the old bearing out and I never found a replacement in the parts catalog. It was in a yellow Corolla shopping trolly disguised as stock with steel wheels and baby on board sticker. With the right pulley on the blower most of the driving was done via the driver or passengers window as too much sideways had been fitted. Ahh memories.....

I had a Corolla lik ethat as well..hahahah

Ugly white AE82 with dirty stock interior..
BUT,
I had about 117Kw at the front wheels..hehehehehe
And an LSD Trans in it..Talk about Axle Tramp :-(
There was that much torque going into this poor little car, I had to have a wheel alignment every 6 months :-)

I had a Cordia like that, bought it when I was in grade 12 in Qld. There was 2 Cordias, mine (the turbo GSR) and this girl, who had a GL.

I did mine to look like hers, even down to removing the rubber boot wing, and changing the wheels.

I replaced the engine with a VR4 Galant twin cam, front mount hidden behind ricer mesh, CAI, etc.

I wash pushing 127Kw at the front wheels before wheel spin kicked in on the Dyno, and it was a ripper to drive.

Problem was, Being Mitsibishi, it was mandatory for it to break something every few months, and it was usually something terminal.

WORST CAR EVER!!!!

ummm. silly question here... but where is the AC belt [which belt is it or is it one and the same as the main pulley belt? I've trawled this site for a photographic break down of the AC system - nothing. All I want to do is the 'apply a dab of grease trick' to stop the 'wooo noise' I get when in drive.

All ancillaries are driven by a single belt on an automatic tensioner. If your belt is slipping, don't apply grease to it - this is ALWAYS the wrong thing to do regardless of the car (its like painting over rust, it hides the problem and thats all). A slipping belt is an indication of a problem. It could be as simple as your v-belt has become too stretched and needs replacing, or it could be that your tensioner arm is no longer providing enough tension - or it could be the early signs of a bearing on the way out.

First check the condition of the belt, if its worn then replace it (they are cheap)
Then check the tensioner - this is easy to do, you can either put a breaker bar on the nut on the pully and see how much effort it takes to make the tensioner arm move (should be quite significant) - or you can get someone to rev the engine in nutral while you watch the tensioner arm - if it moves more than a fraction, the tensioner is shot.
Then check the pullies - remove the v-belt and turn all pullies feeling for binding. Usually the tensioner pully is the one that goes first.

It's the main belt. There is only a single belt that drives everything.

Hmm, now my magnetic clutch is making some weird noises, but only when I am in reverse! Thought it was the drive belt, which was sitting right on the edge of the "A" zone, but replaced that, new belt well into the "B" zone, and its still there, tensioner is fine at 96KN...

Maybe I'm hearing it wrong...
