Gary, try "Soarer Central > Air Conditioning and Climate Control > Soarer Air Condition Specialist in Melbourne". While not quite your location, some useful info.

Having gone through this process many times with my car (just had the 3rd compressor installed on Monday =P) i know a little bit about the process with fixing aircons; heh.

Dont bother with a rebuild, they can be worth a couple hundred dollars and you cant be certain the quality of the compressor when its done.
The best way is to just buy a brand new part. From Toyota or otherwise is your choice i guess =P (Toyota would be a better choice).

Before you get it installed however its probably worth having your system flushed (not vacuum cleaned, flsuhed =P ) as its possible that the crud that caused your compressor to kick the bucket is still in there. In the case of it seizing up you will have lots of little metal particles alllll over the shop.

If it has seized up it may be worth thinking about your TX valve as well, as if this blocks up the gas in the system will not flow and the compressor will be sucking on nothing.. and seize up. Replacing the return drier is a good step to do as well =P

You're looking at $800ish for the part from Toyota and anywhere between $400 to more in labour and additional parts for the extra bits (flushing, TX valve.. etc).

All that ^^-- is looking at potentially $1500, however its worth the investment with the aircon, ESPECIALLY if the compressor has seized.

Try not to cheap out on your aircon however you proceed anyway, and might be best taking the whole job to an aircon guru.

The compressor on a TT is on the left side of the motor under the intake manifold and to change them you have to do it from underneath. A simple way to see if it is working james is start your engine WITHOUT the air cond on and go have a look under your bonnet. You should be able to see the powersteering pump/ pulley on the left hand side just under the intake manifold, if your not sure just follow the hoses from the reservoir to the pump. then under that pulley near the bottom of the block is another pulley whichs looks different to all the others ( it will have 3 bands that go across the face of the pulley i think). Now if you have your motor running and your air cond off the out side of that pulley should be spinning but the inside of the pulley will stay stationary. Go and hit the air cond button on your dash and go and have another look at that pulley. The centre of that pulley should be moving with the belt now and if not, you may have a blown fuse but more then likely you will have no gas in the system which most of the time prevents the compressor from operating to stop it from distroying itself.

Gary I rang this place on Randall Street (Slacks Creek), not sure where you're located in QLD but they quoted me $295 on an exchange basis, so basically you give them your old one and they give you a reconditioned one. Place is called Mark Gibbs Panel House.

i just checked to see if there were any pressure in the system, theres nothing, so im guessing there is a safety lp control/switch that is stoppin the comp from running, so im gonna have to put some more gas in it.

where do i find the label to find out what gas it has in it and does the label say how much to put in?
