G'day everyone,
Just a thought, has anyone ever tried this sort of product for the AC backlight?

http://www.ledsales.com.au/cart.php?target=product&product_id=376&category_id=35

Cheers, BT

PS - also, can anyone foresee any problems with using this type of thing?

well i dont see why not. i did the good old resister and led combo and solderd them in.

what you have there would be a lot neater as all you have to do is solder the two wires to any power source that lights the backlight.

the only thing is if the light will be evenly distributed (no dark and light spots), other than that should be sweet

For even light distribution, i found that backward firing them worked the best. Ie, aiming the LED away from the LCD.. I covered the hole where the bulb came through with a piece of paper..

Those strip LEDs look pretty good, but they might be waaaay to bright.. i had to really back mine off so I could see at night :-)

Cheers fellas,

In general though, what size LED would be easier/better to use for all the bulbs (ie AC unit, hazard, auto, volume etc) - 3mm or 5mm. Because im thinking that the 5mm may be a little too big for the hazrads etc.

What you all think?

well for the backlight there are three globes, i used
- i used six 5mm (two for each globe), but its a little bit to bright, either way up to you

for the lighting of the buttons
- used 5mm for each

for the lighting of the little squares above the top buttons
- used 5mm

for the auto shifter
-used 5mm for lighting the P,N,R,D,1,2
-for the little sqaures used 3mm

for the ect swtich, vol, basically the small buttons
- 3mm, you wouldnt able to fit 5mm anyway

you should be right

and from memory i think i used 1K or 1.2K resistors for everything. definitely nothing lower than 1 K. you really need to limit the current because the leds will be too bright

anyway good luck

This may sound like a dumbass question but im looking at various LEDs that are pre wired with resistor etc on ebay, and some of the ads state "3mm 10Kmcd"

What exactly is this 10Kmcd business? Is it the resistor size? Or am i totally off base.

Thanks, BT

Dont worry people - i think i have figured it out. Im pretty sure it refers to the brightness of the LED.

Thanks

Yep, it's brightness.. Milli candella..

I used 3mm leds in the AC display and 5mm everywhere else.. (apart from the direct bulb replacements)

I also setup my AC display up with a potentiometer so I could vary the brightness ;)

can post pics if you need/want

I just wired up 4 in series i think and ran a trimpot to a 12v rail i found..

Not the most elegant solution, but the leds draw stuff all current and you cant even tell they are on in the daytime.

I ran the trimpot out of the unit and tucked it up under the dash.

I also did the button backlights. See pics..

Hey guys
i was just wondering if someone could point me in the right direction in regards to what sort of LEDs i should use with my AC display and buttons.
From reading the previous posts i'm aware of what sizes i should use but what mcd should i use and is there anything important that i should know?
from looking at
http://www.ledsales.com.au/cart.php?target=category&category_id=44
i'm confused as to which LEDs i should use.
Any help is mostly appreciated
