Does the A/C only draw power whilst it's on cooling, and does the clutch just idle at other times?

Apropos of which, I've often wondered if it's possible to have a switch linked to the kick-down function of the trans, so that if you're running with the A/C on, and (for whatever) reason need MAX performance, it cuts the A/C off for the duration of kick-down, thereby giving you optimum performance .

One of the Mitsi Gallant imports we had featured this, but possibly because it was only an 1800cc engine, and needed all the help it could get during full throttle applications.

I read somewhere in a different lifetime that the A/C does disconnect at WOT on a Soarer. Any one else know anything about this?

Easy way to check, idling your engine, just put your temperature to heating, then press AC and see if your revs change... then just keep turning the temp down and see when it kicks in. I might try it after work.

Daniel, different issue. Even on heat setting, the A/C runs to dehumidify the air.

We are talking about WOT not to be confused with HOT :-)

WOT = Wide Open Throttle.

Well the original question asks if it only draws power on cooling and if at other times (meaning heating) it doesn't? Cihan answered yes but you are saying no Peter. So I figured u can easily check which is the case...

I am saying that the A/C is on any time you switch it on, regardless of temp setting.

It freewheels via a clutch when switched Off.

What I am curious about though, is whether it disengages at WOT :-)

Hmmmm, yeah I'd be curious about that too. It sux it doesnt switch off when heating, just a waste of petrol if u use the auto temp feature...

I did read somewhere, a long time ago, that it did turn it self off, over 4000 rpm. I don't know where I read it though!!

That wouldn't be too hard to check then. Cruise at high revs and see if it loses it's cool.

Had a 91 Maxima where the A\C pump would switch off at WOT.
