I've never seen anything like this before. After a couple of minutes when aircon is on a white dense smoke comes out of exhaust - hard to spot when driving. It doesn't seem to appear under the hood when slow down, and doesn't show in any other circumstances. Any idea what might be causing this problem?

No idea, but I have had the same thing happen to me as well. Seems like there is nothing wrong with the car, during or after. Only happens when it has been sitting for a while and the temp is over 35 outside.

Haydn: Why is it normal? There is no part of the air con system, that I can think of that should come into contact with any exhaust pipes/engine components..

i dont think it is smoke, just like when you open your freezer in your house sometimes, havnt you seen that smoky stuff come out ?

even noticed it my beema they other day when air is on full, then i turn it down a bit then blast it up again a bit of "smoke" comes out.

surely there must be an Air Con wizz on here to tell us what it means or is.

later.

just been told it is normal it has something to do with the temp in the vents ,if it is like a mist no problemo, if your smelling smoke it is a leak.

Haydn there is no way in the world.. when you turn the air on it would change any exhaust gases so its not normal,i know what you mean about the vents smokeing.. high humidity causes that.

Thats an indication of worn piston rings or glazed cylinder bores. When the water temp is high and revs/cylinder pressure is low, the oil film on the bores becomes very hot and thins to the point where it passes through the oil seal/s and burns.

It can also happen if the engine has clocked a few kays and you're using a low weight oil.

Common causes of accelerated wear/glazing (if the block has genuine low kays) is an over-fueled mixture at low revs or long term over-fueling under boost. When i say overfueling, im talking sub 10:1 with petrol.

Same thing can happen with turbos, but they tend to be more consistent, not so much coolant temperature dependant.
