Wouldn't it be the same for any gas(in its natural state) pressurised and stored as a liquid?

I think that is part of the lure of nitrous, it has a cooling effect as well as the extra O2. That's my basic understanding of gases anyway.

Oh and in Ken's defence-I was once told that there may be a leak in a "valve" up under the dash in an AC post...

HAHAHAHAHHA
just read all this.

Guys we all know Neil as a straight down the line NO bull sh*t about it.
You will get it straight between the eyes
and in any language that rolls of his tongue at the time.
BUT
remember it will be straight to the point.
there will be some gaps in the conversation that have not been filled in (prick) BUT it allows you to think about what is missing. so you learn
BUT also most importantly
If there is a danger in doing the job like air con gases.
Neil isn't backwards in coming forwards with what dangers you are playing with.

WTF is with all the hostility in this thread?

Ken had a problem, asked for advice, and gets told he's an absolute for trying.

You guys are jumping to a lot of conclusions?

Who's to say Ken didn't ask them if the system was already free of gas?
Who's to say the place didn't evacuate the system before given the car back to Ken?
Who's to say Ken didn't get their advice when he said he'd attempt it himself?
And who's to say it has R12 in it? How do you know its not R134A (not that it makes a huge difference). I was under the impression that all imports with R12 were degassed when they reached the country?

I've done heaps of work on my own aircon system.
if I'm going to pay someone to undo a few bolts, get a hose rebuilt, remove the a/c compressor, etc.
Granted the system was already 99% empty of gas, but that tends to be the case when aircon doesn't work isn't it now?

I've just spent about $600 redoing my aircon.
Compressor seal to be replaced, hoses to be rebuilt, etc.
ALL the labour was done by me (bar rebuilding the compressor).
This would have cost WELL over $1500 had I got the shop to do it.

I say go for it Ken, just make sure from the shop that there is no gas in the system first.
As others have pointed out that the most important thing.

Yeah.. well, I was surprised no one asked me those questions.

This is what happened when I tried to get my air con regased 2 weeks ago - by a professional mind you!. The system got flushed of gass etc. Then it was put in a vacuum which took 20mins or so, and then the attempt to put gass in it. Gas could not be filled because the TX valve is blocked. So, there is no gas in the system! If there was, then there would not have been a problem with the valve and I would be enjoying my AC right now. I couldn't be bothered revealing all this before because thing already got heated, and...I just thought "forget it".

I'm not sure though if you can still work on the air con with the system in a vacuum.

I'd still like to work on it, but the tx valve takes 1 month from Toyota to get it ordered. Might end up taking to it to the pro's. Undecided.

Andrew.
Lighten up.
It's an internet forum.
The dude asked a question about where to find a valve and then posted a picture showing clearly its location and then another close up picture of the valve.
What the bloody hell do you think happens on the internet in those cases..? In a lot of forums you get ribbed about it for years.

Jesus hell this place gets pretty PC touchy touchy sometimes.

My reply was not to do with that. I found that as amusing as the next person.

My beef was with the 30 or so posts that followed it.

With the right information! Things wouldn't have got hot. Some of us that commented on it at the start of the thread were very concerned for your well-fair NOT knowing the full details that there was 99% no gas in the system. Now that we know this now there is a different light on the subject.
Don't take all the comments rong as it's not what they intended.Fair enough! Some of the comments were blunt and could be read as a stab at you.Have a second read of it and see why we commented the way we did.
