After trying to get the air con regas, I was told that the tx valve (expansion valve) is blocked. The system was able to be put in a vacuum but refilling it with gas was a problem. Anyhow I was quoted for about $540 for the job to be done with regassing, so I decided to go about this on my own.

I've already ordered the tx-valve from toyota which costed me $127.

I know the tx valve is usually behind the glove box so I got behind the glove box and I couldn't spot it. Can someone help me here?

Also, what is thing in the second picture next to the evaporator? As you can see theres some sort of leakage - I assume liquid is the dye.

Ken I hope you are joking.

If you don't have the right tools to do the job then you won't be able to.

The second pic looks like the TX valve. The colouring is the leak detecting additive they put in the gas to make it easier to find the leak.

Seriously take it to an air conditioning shop. There are special gauges, hoses and fittings not to mention the gas.

Thanks paul, I had no idea it was that kind of job that needs to be done by a professional. I know some people tried to do it on their own as well on this site, and I was just asking so I can also learn about the air con system.

As for Miles and Neil, if you don't have anything informative to say - then don't post. Geeeez

Well Ken,

1st,
You asked WHERE is the TX Valve ? And then you posted a pic of it.

2nd,
Do you have an ARCTIC Lisence to work on Air Con Systems ?

3rd,
Are you going DUMP the R12 into the Atmosphere when you remove the TX ?
Or, do you have a recovery system at home ?

Wake UP.

FFS, you MAY cause yourself a serious INJURY.

This is WHY so many people get INJURED, trying to save a buck by doing sh!t they know nothing about.

AC Gas DOES give FROST BITE.

May as well go probe a power point with a wet pick to see if it is ON.

IS THIS INFORMATIVE ENOUGH ???????????

Ken,
I understand you wanting to learn and do as much yourself but air conditioning is not one of those.

Good luck with your other learning experiences.

And Neil, don't pay out too much on him. We all have to learn sometime.

I honestly wanted to know if you were serious.

The second picture is a close up of the part you were asking for the location of, and the suggestion of doing AC work at home is just crazy!

Ken, if you read it through again, Miles simply asked if you were serious and Neil had a chuckle.

And you got too easily offended and away it went from there.

Then Neil explained in detail, and you still kept playing the part of being offended.

Perhaps that would have been the time to show some appreciation for a detailed reply.

It's posts like yours that don't show any appreciation for the valuable insight and help from experienced members that stops people from posting, not the other way around.

Neil's Knowledge is GOLDEN in this forum, when he replies with information, it should be taken as a new page written for the bible.

Sometimes he might not come across as the friendliest person in the world, but with his superior knowledge ont he subject, he doesn't need to be all warm and fuzzy to get his message across.

I say all 3 kiss and make up and we all have a BBQ to celebrate lol.

I know Neil is right I'm not disputing that. I'm not going to work on the air con system anyway after I had a look at it, but I was still curious thats why I posted.

Anyways, I'm going to leave all the work for the AC man

Miles, we are both right.

Neil's Knowledge is GOLDEN
Neil's Advice is TRUE.

Either way, love or hate him, when he writes something up on these (or other) forums, I read and take due note of what is written, and I have great respect for him to spend time in here passing on knowledge and advice, even if it's a little direct.

There is probably nicer ways to put some of the advice, but at the end of the day, the message has been passed across, take it lightly, or take offence, the message has still gotten there, and it's very possible (especially in this case) that Neil has save someone some serious health risks, and done his bit for the environment.

How much exposure to the gas do you need to get a frost bite? Is it just like liquid nitrogen or worse?

Not having first hand info on this, the gas is under pressure, and shoots out quite quickly.

The gad is also liquid form, but the cooling happens as it turns to a gaseous state, therefore as it escapes the system, it turns to gas, it freezes to EXTREAMLY cold temperatures (similar to liquid nitrogen.

So I guess the temperatures, and the pressures taken together would suggest it could be much more harmful than liquid nitrogen, but again, this would all depend on the amount.

Doesn't take a lot to freeze a hand up numb, a friend of mine did it when he thought he would change the A/C compressor himself, he was lucky, only got frost bite and lost skin, but he was told it was so close to being a lot worse.
