I haven't been able to find a suitable thread, so i am going to start one. I haven't used my aircon for a while as i live in queensland, but since all this rain has been on, it has cooled down somewhat, and i wanted to put the heater on today, but unfortunately no heat came out, only freezing cold air. If anyone has had this issue of the heater not working, any help would be appreciated, and if so, is it a complicated or expensive fix. Thankyou in advance

Could be a number of things. Start with the simplest, check your coolant level - if its low fluid may not be getting to the heater elements.

Do a search for vsv valve as this often causes that fault

that is the solenoid looking thing on the passenger side of the engine with hoses looping in and out of it. are they an expensive fix?

on that note peter, how much is it to fix approximately? because i had a quote from a local toyota dealer that will import spare parts, and they said ex japan is $890

There is a much cheaper Camry one that fits apparently.

If you want your fix to remain "stock" in terms of looks, you can replace your old VSV with Toyota part # 88690-32280. It's from a Camry and is virtually identical to the original stock one. Only thing you'll have to do is cut off the leads from the old VSV and attach to the new one with solderless connectors. The new unit comes with a bracket that you can discard, and mount the new one to the stock heater diaphragm valve just like the old one. Oh, and it only costs about Aus $70 (2001).

Would this problem also cause A/C to stop working, or would that most likely be no A/C gas? Cheers, Tim

Totally unrelated to the A/C. Probably no gas as you suggested. Apart from A/C stuff, quite a few of us use Steve Kramp at Manta Racing in Richmond for Soarer mechanical work.

Andrew, another 'first check' is to inspect all round where the radiator top tank fits to the radiator core for any evidence of moisture - if so, strong chance of a cracked top tank. The fluid level would also be low, maybe empty, in the coolant top up & level indicator plastic header tank. (Had a fun day between Christmas and New Year swapping a radiator over - same symptoms as you describe, did a SC search on "heater", read all the posts and envisaged horrendous costs, proceeded to physically identify all the parts mentioned, and happened to look at the top tank and saw fluid at the join with the core. Still $200 to repair the radiator (new top tank), but 'better' than other potential causes. Removing the radiator is straightforward [on a 31, more difficult on a 32, no idea about a T or TT but posts suggest OK)

and that solved you heater problem jim? everything was working fine, because i normally drive around town with the temperature sitting on around 23 - 25 degrees on the climate control and worked fine before i went away to victoria for the christmas, i came back to all the rain, and was a liitle cold, put the heater onto 28 and was flipping freezing, so i am thinking it might be the VSV valve has just ceased closed, so i might try a bit of wd40 on the actuator part and see if it frees it up. probably the humidity here has just put some surface rust on it, just enough to stop it moving. (been in the 80% from around the 18th december till now, and still going) thanks for all the help as well chaps

Andrew, Yes the heater is now performing fine with almost instant heat. ... slow reply, as it took a couple of days before Melbourne was cool enough for the test pilot (daughter) to be willing to turn the heater on!

found out what the issue is, it is still a little sticky, but the issue was the actual actuator, and there is a little plastic cylinder the actuator rod moves through, and because it is in the engine bay, the plastic has got brittle and broken, so i will probably have to fabricate something to fix that. but otherwise i now have heat. YAY!
