After I rinsed them, I let them sit in a bucket with vanilla essence and a little water. Gives the car a nice smell

Good idea! They're easy to get out, so I'll do that!

On the evidence I think "cancer death of owner" might be one of the main reasons these cars become available

While I did banish the smell from the filters with their soaking in sugar soap solution, I took the advice of one of the other posters and sprayed Glen 20 into the recess and thoroughly sprayed the filters too. This has worked well and leaves a pleasant smell through the car. I'd recommend using the "original fragrance" though as it's fairly "neutral". Some of the others might be strong enough to be unpleasant - they're more like a typical toilet deodorant. Glen 20 is a fungicide too, so if there is a fungus problem anywhere in the cabin AC unit, it should kill it.

Mentioned on previous post: Leaving AC on MAX cold at medium to high fan speed for 5-10 minutes does actually work if the problem isnt too bad.
Only risk is that some of the foam insulation in the AC ducts might get loose and start coming off because of the fan speed.
