My car is now doing this too. With evidence of black foam pieces which would be disintegrated seals. Why would there be hot water flowing through the heater core when temp set to cold, i thought it would only flow when asked for. I think cleaning my ac filters (very black and blocked) resulted in a much greater air flow and pressure which blew my perished seals away.

I always thought it was the heat from the turbos, as the turbos are located on the drivers side. Passenger always say they don't get hot, but I sweat like hell. Wouldn't know about V8's though.
