Hey guys, today was my lucky day i found my soarer full of water passenger side. The water is leaking a fine bit over and behind the ECU ect. I was wondering what i could do for a quick fix, i only drive my soarer once every few days (have another car), and dont want to pull the dash down to get it fixed until november, after exams (unless i get bored one weekend, or two)
I have read about changing the VSV hoses (bypassing), but some threads say to get heater working, bypass the VSV, or to stop water getting to heater core, bypass VSV. either way, i have done it with the vaccum hoses, as per diagram on here,
Is this doing what i want? closing the water supply? or still opening it up??
Should i just get a permanent hose made up from the VSV outlet straight to the other side of the engine, where the unit comes out the wall to.
Any help appreciated, Thanks a lot.

Michael, you need to bridge the water hoses. The VSV bypass using the vacuum hoses actually makes the heater stay on, so water is flowing all the time.
Yeah, i figured that, after i had done it and was going home from the gf's house, heater still worked, so used that to help dry the carpets. Might play around with it tommorow, have a look for some decent hose.

It doesnt seem to run too much when the car is running, just when the engine is stopped it leaks, and leaks. I was out of water the other day, had to fill up (before i knew it was going into passenger side). I will go home today and see how it is, i have towels under the carpets hopefully soaked up as much that run out, might go see where i can get some hose from, just wonder if i need plain radiator / water style hose, or a high pressure hose.

Haha to late about the hose idea, i already have most of the dash apart, will get photos soon, just the top half left. Will worry about it another day.
Heres some photos of where i got to the other day, just have to get the top half off now, and ideas? Should i start over at the steering wheel and column and dash?? Would be good to know where to start for next time i head into it, probably wednesday.
On a lighter and more happy note, we just finished the dash on my girlfriends mini we are putting back together, will look awesome when the headunit, speakers and all guages are in.

Flush the system every 2 years and use Toyota Longlife coolant and it shouldn't be a problem.
A lot of these cars are now 17 years old, but it appears that this problem isn't that common, so it's most likely lack of regular maintenance and/or cheap coolant that is the contributing factor. The problem is, that we have no idea how well the cars were looked after before we got hem.
Well here i am, about to head back to the garage and continue pulling it apart. Seriously, where i have got to at the moment, was no hassle, its really simple to pull the stuff out, just make sure piece by piece that comes out, it is placed down somewhere with all the necesary screws etc. From what i have read, the next part top of the dash, isnt to hard either, just have to get rid of the loom etc. I will let you guys know how every thing goes. Once its all out, i have to work out which part of that HUGE system is the actuall heater core.

Haha, well im there, what a crap of a job to do lol.
Do i need to take that protrusion bar thing off to do what i need to do with the heater core?? I only have one bolt left i think, but its way back under the steering column.
Any help how to get to the heater core, seems to be tucked way at the back (i can see the pipes coming through)

Michael, I had an `87 Toyota that sprung a leak in the heater core, I pulled the motor and cut a hole in the firewall with a 3" cut off wheel, big enough to remove the core ( there was no front bulkhead in the heater box, it just came straight out), then screwed a plate over the hole. That`s not going to help you, just thought I would add that here. I admire your grit, you have to respect someone with the courage to go this deep into their car. P.S. I like the bucket seat in the previous photo
Hahah, the bucket is there to hold the steering column up as i unboled it, was woried if the colums sagged all the way to the ground it might do some damage, so i will support it while im fixing this crap.
Heater core finally out, looks very mangy, not a pretty sight. Its been a long road, when i get my new core, going to have to start the road again, in reverse

will do, i kinda stopped taking photos.... back when i had all the harness taken of the fan box, theres not many photos you can take of sitting in the car yanking at the fan box wondering why its not coming out. My cars a mess. Atleast all the stereo wiring, turbo timer, boost controller and alarm wiring can be done neat when everything goes back together, will go grab some photos now and post up soon.

Now could be a good time to remove the door chime and de-regulate the cruise control. I have just done that and can understand how far you have gone here, however you probably don`t want to take on any more tasks than necessary inside there. I always say:- take on more than you can chew, then chew like hell.
Yeah, due to me being able to take my time with this, i have thought about "what" to do while everything is out, with the aid of the "free" soarer guide circulating, i had a quick browse, thought about the door chime. Thanks for the enthusiasm, i think i will make my list of things and start getting through them, why not? Thanks Guys

Michael, just thinking out loud?, have you considered removing the drivers door to allow more access to the R/H side, they don`t open that far, and the harness will be unpluged if you are thinking of silencing the chime. How is the condition of the door hinge, I replaced mine last week, now the door closes without having to slam it.
i "think" my hinges are fine, i have never had a problem with them for the 3 years ive had the car, so i assume its all good. Will have a look on wednesday for things to do to my car while its off the road. I am constantly getting 2 errors on the dash, ABS every now and then, happens since i put the new turbo timer in (greddy) and i have read other people have the same problem. I also get a JAP warning about my rear lights.... my rivers side parker has intermittet failure, every now and then it will work, wont work. Need to take one of my sub boxed out to get to it though. Will have a look around. Cruise control fix is a definant, didn't even think of that earlier. I got pictures of the heater core peter, just left the camera at the girlfriends, will chuck them up tomorrow night.
