hey guys. Summers starting to kick in now and it's getting stinking hot in my soarer. I went to turn the air con on the other day and the light kept flashing. I popped the bonnet to have a look and when the aircon first turns on it starts squealing and then when it starts flashing thats when i assume the air con stops and turns off. I've read up different things like the flashing means the air con needs to be regassed and or that it means compression lock-up. I had an air con bloke check it out and he said he can't check the compressor or re gas it because the soarer air con can't take the pressure that most air con repair guys use to check it. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be and if they know any good air con guys around the northern suburbs in melbourne. cheers guys

I don't know what pressure the guy is talking about but in my experience the Soarer AC setup is the same as every other vehicle out there.

If it's a 93 or earlier then it will be R12 which means it will need converting to R134A which if it's done properly is quite expensive.

If you have a squealing when the system is turned on then it sounds like the compressor has seized which is common. I would go with a second hand unit and get it gassed up again.

Matt.

"can't take the pressure"..?? Personally i would go to another A/C place..as far as i can figure out the crack pressure (TX valve)of either the R12 or the R134a systems is the same.Normal operating pressure of the R134a is a bit higher due to its in-efficiences in thermal expansion so needs to run "longer" to develop the same differential heat disipation.
As Matt has said "If" it needs to be converted it can be quite expensive.
A word of WARNING here "DO NOT" try mixing R134a gas with the old oil in the compressor.Mineral based fluids and Vegetable based "O" rings do not like each other with the consequence of "seized compressors",restricted hoses and sticky T/X valves etc etc.
