Hey guys i got quoted $300 to remove the compressor as they say its about a 5hr job but they told me i would be better off doing it myself and saving the cash. Anyway my question is how hard is it to remove the compressor? From what ive seen its not too hard, maybe a couple of hours. Also how time consuming it is taking it off if im wrong about the couple of hours.
Thing is i really cant afford to be without a car for more than 2 days so depending how long it take to do it myself i might end up getting them to do it.

Replacing the turbos will take between 5 and 8 hours - not a job for the novice mechanic, trust me. Every single nut, bolt and washer will be a b*gger to remove due to the heat, and even with good quality tools it helps if you have extra joints in your fingers and the help of a well-trained chimp to get at some of them.

Not really that difficult at all mate, I'd be suprised if it took anyone 5hrs just to remove it! I'd offer to give you a hand, but I'm booked out for the next week

Dave, quad turbos aside, removing the compressor is quite easy. There is one major difficulty though. The compressor sits on a 4inch long stud, and it has some reverse Torx head on it. There isn't enough room between the stud and the strut tower/ rail/ guard to get the compressor off. Some people have told me they just remove this stud, but I tried on both my cars and they wouldn't budge. What I've done in each case is undo the passenger engine mount and (using a block of wood etc) jacked the left side up off the mount to get some room. You can then wiggle the compressor off the stud and out of the bay. Wear long sleeves, or prepare for a few scratches as it is a bit of a chinese puzzle getting it out, but it does come out.
I used the same technique to get the new one in.

Yeah from the manuals i have it seems there are 6 bolts and the engine mount has to be undone. Will see if i get time as im moving to a new house which is shared and i dont think they will like me having parts everywhere. Only got another 2 week to get this done otherwise ill have to pay i reckon. Pretty much last thing i want done to the car and then i can enjoy it and not thing about changing this or upgrading that.

I just noticed this thread. I am in exactly the same boat (without the time constraints however). My concern is how much of the power steering lines get in the way and whatever else might get in the way as well (does the radiator shroud get in the way when removing it as well for instance) I am happy to lend a hand as it is something i need to do as well (I'm south of town if that is where you are). One side note however, I have the new compressor in front of me (from toyota) and i can only see 5 mounting points, 3 on the front face and 2 very deep ones on the back. My other concern is degassing it before pulling it apart.
