Haydn,
I had my evaporator replaced by a local air con mob down here in august. The part cost $350.
While i did not watch him remove it, i was there when it was in bits. The evaportaor is located behind the glove box, remove it and the black cooler piping, there is a black cover back there somewhere and the evaporator slides in vertically and buts up against the fire wall.
Look under your engine bay and follow the pipes for a rough idea of its location.
It didnt look all that hard to get to, the machanic i used said the whole job including regas only took about 3.5 hours.
As far as i am aware there is not subsitute evaportator that will fit the soarer. so we had to order one from toyota.

The Prado one fits with a small modification, that costs about $350, the Soarer one is $600 plus. The guy that does the Sports and Luxury workshop did mine.
