As I work through fixing up my 32 I have come to the air con which does not get cold, so I went for a regas but with about a kilo of gas it was no different (it had about a 1/2 kilo when they started to charge it up).
They took the gas back out and booked me for next week on Friday.

NOw I know that Air cons can be very expensive to fix sometimes so wondered if any one can offer advise as to what I myself might do before I go back to them?

Could I order and put a TX valve in along with a new dryer or at least get these parts from the U.S. if it is the same as the SC400? I am not very familiar with air con systems and don't know where the TX valve is. Can someone advise?

Under the bonnet there is a sticker that says that the compressor was replaced at the end of 2009, so shouldn't be that?

The system just blow ambient air temp at you.

Is there any difference between the 31 and 32 air compressor or anything else in the system?

Not sure about the 31 & 32 Differences. I'd assume there identical other than possibly some metal AC lines being different due to the 32's suspension.

The TX valve is located behind the glove box in next too the evaporator core & the cabin air filters. It's pretty easy too get too once the glove box is removed(few screws) and then remove the plastic cover housing the tx valve, evap core & filters.

Toyota genuine TX valve is $180 from castle hill Toyota + 3 weeks shipping from Japan.

However, You can pick up TX valves aka expansion valves for fairly cheap, I've had this one in mine for about a year with no problems.

Also make sure too always replace the drier receiver once the system has been open too atmosphere, there cheap also. It's located behind the passenger side headlight.

If the compressor was replaced with a used one, it may have died, The compressor should be the same in the 31 & 32 being its a 1UZ so incase:

Also this compressor comes with a TX valve & Drier receiver all bundled in one.

Leaky TX Vales are a common thing, so it may just be that, cheap and simple fix & easy to get too.

Any proper A/C certified mechanic will be able to diagnose any issues within the system, so i'd suggest getting it diagnosed before throwing parts at it.

Hope that helps!

The rear housing/mount on the '32 compressor is different, but can be changed onto a '31 comp with some dissassembly.

Everything else in the system is the same.

Make sure the compressor wasn't swapped directly with a '31 comp, as the 2 front mounts bolt up but the rear one doesn't. This puts a lot of load on the fan pump (where the comp mounts) which leads to it breaking, as I found out years ago when I found my '32 had been fitted with a '31 comp.

Thanks for your help. My car appears to have been converted to the newer environmentally friendly gas, so do I need to order a special TX valve or a special dryer?

That dryer is from Hong Kong so could take a fare while to come here. If I got it from the U.S. it is much quicker but I would need to know if there are any differences in models and or the gas that they use to be sure that I was getting the right one. The add says from the 9/93. Is this ok for our 91 models?

Jesse, I read a post by you that said you got a TX valve + dryer combo out of the U.S. for $20 plus $35 express postage. Where was that from? do you have a link for that deal so I can get them both together? thanks.

What type is the "newer environmentally friendly gas" which it now has in it?
If it's a hydrocarbon gas it only needs 30% of the original R12 ie about 300grams.

I don't know what gas it has in it but the little caps are new and the same as my 31 had fitted when the put the new gas in it and took the R12 out. I think the new one is R134a, as that is Qld. law as far as I know. Wish it could be HC but that hasn't been passed here yet. I read a great article confirming the use of HCs See:

By the way Lynton, how did the unichip benefit you. I noticed it on your profile.

I think the law in Qld regarding hydrocarbons is that it isn't banned but you need to be licensed to "handle" (gas a car with) it.

I've had the Unichip in my car for probably 9 years now.

When it was fitted it needed to be tuned with a dyno, With extractors and a free flowing exhaust I got more torque and about 30rwkw with a total oem feel. It's run perfectly since.

I think now there are better and more tune-able piggybacks being used.

Lynton, I just booked in with a local guy who has a license to do HCs and he is willing for me to troubleshoot and let me replace whatever I need before he does the gassing for me. He says that it will probably only need about 200 grams of HC.
I will see how I go a in another week when I will see him.

I may get one of those better piggybacks one day. What is the cost and what do you suggest?
