Well I think my AC system is losing gas, but I think something else is going on.

The cold pipe just doesn't frost up anymore and the system doesn't cool anywhere near as when freshly re-gassed. I noticed a slight improvement after I re-installed all the cooling fans,

however:

Yesterday after 4.5 hours of driving, 1 of which was in a huge traffic jam on the Hume Hwy, I noticed the compressor only cuts in for a second or so, then disengages for 10 sec or so, then retries, only to then stop again, and keeps repeating this cycle but varies in time a bit.

Today with everything cooled down, the AC works again and the compressor stayed engaged, but I'm sure when everything heats up the compressor will disengage like it was yesterday. No warning lights or anything on the climate control display.

Are these symptoms consistent with just low gas, or is there something else going on? I've basically been through every thread in here but any further "common problem" suggestions much appreciated. In the meantime I'll get hold of a UV light and start looking for leaks.

OK so on a long drive at night last Monday I get the dreaded flashing AC light, with added obvious successive engine load/unload cycles (while cruising at 110kph/2500rpm) which tells me my compressor is seized.

I think on top of a possible leak, when I got the system re-gassed the guy did not flush the system. The high side restriction was probably from a blockage caused from crap from the previous original compressor which was very noisy, which also killed this replacement compressor in 3 months/less than 10,000kms.

So my mission is to swap the evaporator and tx valve with the parts from my '91 wreck (which had working AC), replace all o-rings, get everything flushed, install a new compressor, get re-gas with extra flush done from an actual AC specialist in a shop, (not some guy in a mobile truck in a rush to get to the next job), confirm they will use the correct amount of gas before they start, get them to test for leaks on the day and again 3 or 4 weeks later.

Joe have you found and confirmed the source of the problem yet before you begin putting new parts in?

Get a set of Guages on then see what the readings are at Idle and 1500RPM, then recharge the car and see how it behaves with a full charge.

Who's good in Vic? I've had my aircon problem for 4 years. Only doesn't work when you really need it.

Boris I havn't done anything. I planned to get onto it after nye but the ac compressor is now seized (can't turn it by hand). To do tests now requires re-installation of a working compressor and a regas anyway. I do have the original working but noisy compressor sitting here.

Is there anything that can go wrong other than leaks, compressor and the tx valve?

Yes, Poor heat exchange due to bad airflow or dirt, restrictions and blockages, electrical faults, relays and switches.

Boris, I just read your posts in the LPG thread. Your overflowing pile of knowledge has given me some much needed confidence. I might start on swapping over the compressor today.
