Has anyone physically separated the fan unit from the fan motor? The fan appears to be only held in place by a spindle that pokes up through the middle of it, and held in place with the plastic collar (after removing the metal clamp/clasp.)

Mine is not budging and I don't want to break the 23 yr old plastic collar by forcing it.
