my passenger side vent whistles when i close it, does anybody know what part must be loose/missing inside that would cause this? maybe i just need to add some foam/rubber somewhere?

So did mine. My solution was to open it and I have had no problems since
If you have Auto on, why close it anyway? Mine happened only because a passenger closed it rather than diverting the air away from their face. More air vents open means lower air speeds for the same heating/cooling.
I have thus foresworn my preferred answer which was:

The vents have a narrow channel in the back of them with a strip of foam in it. When you close them this foam should make a good seal against the plastic bit it deteriorates with age and will have bits missing out of it for sure. I pulled mine apart and put new foam in them while I replaced my centre vent, but unless you are prepared to do that I think you are going to have to just live with it

Perry, Thank you, I have opened up my vents before and it was not that difficult so I will go with the foam solution and hope that works.
David, my girlfriend wears contacts which frequently dry up when even the slightest bit of conditioned air is blown into her eyes. Since my vents themselves are broken (only 2 fins left), when they are moved all the way up/sideways a bit of air still blows directly back. The cheapest quote ive got for a new vent is $45 so replacing some foam is my best option so far. Thanks for the post anyway.

I understand the contacts problem. I gave up on them many years ago because even the thinnest I could buy at the time still left me with irritating dryness in air conditioned offices or on a summer day in Canberra.
