Well its just my luck , 3 months after I did the interior the AFM decides to pack it in and after spending $230 for a replacement what should happen that night.... the bloddy heater core decides to leak.

My wife was driving home when she rings me on the mobile and tells me that water in bubbling out from the dash and vents.... fogging up all the windows, obviously she pulled over at this stage ...luckily she was close to home.

So the next few weeks while the car was out of action I decided to hunt for the problem , I realised that there was water leaking from the front passenger side and traced it back up towards the dash......IT COULD ONLY MEAN ONE THING

I knew I was in for one hell of a job.

Anyway check out the pics.....all I have to do now is track down a heater core$$$$$.....If you guys are interested I can do a step by step pictorial in case you ever need to do it yourself.

Would you be interested in that or is it a waste of time.

Joe, a tutorial would be greatly appreciated. As these cars get older, it's bound to happen to someone else.

I imagine pulling it apart isn't too bad - it'll be the putting back together where the fun really starts...

OMG Just looking at that makes me wanna run to the cupboard and pop quite a few prozax's

Mine started leaking a couple of years ago and i ended up by-passing the heater core and rugging up in winter

What a scary job

I too wouldn't mind seeing a tutorial surfacing on how to fix the problem. Sorry to hear about your car, rather unfortunate that someone like yourself would ever have to go through such things. Hope everything works out ok in the smoothes and best way possible.

My heater core started leaking back in 2002. At the time I had Parramatta Auto Cooling replace the heater core all up for $693.00 which included $99.00 for a new heater core. Being a Limited model the water leaked under the carpet and went under the rear seat into the radio tuner. It cost me another $150.00 to have the tuner repaired. At least the guys at Parramatta Auto Cooling praised the design of the Soarer saying that at least you can unbolt everything to get at the heater core. In Commodores everything is glued in place.

Too right mate, that's why working on a car that belongs to an engineer is always easier, they always understand when you have a few parts left over with nowhere for them to go

I'm always paranoid about that when working on my fiancee's car as she'd make me pull it all apart again and try again until I'd used all the left over bits...

Yeh my heater core just died last night, water all through the passenger carpet and the engine heated up nice and quick...
Oh yeh and my car smells like fish now too ;P

I really dont want to have to pull out all the dash like that, but i know its going to get nice a cold very soon... Guess I'll have to by-pass the heater until i get a chance to fix it.

Joe a tutorial would be a great help ;)

Ray, was that $99.00 for a brand new heater core?

Hi Michael ,

Sorry to hear about your heater core , I know from the pics I posted a while ago that it looks a little daunting but its not that hard . There are a few little tricks that luckily Neil told me about .....otherwise I would have had a hell of a time trying to get it out.

I picked up the AC probe today from Jeff Harper ( Thanks mate ) and went straight to work on putting it all back together.

So from 1:00pm to 5:30pm today this is the stage I am at and by tomorrow this car will finally be back on the road.... Thank Christ for that
my picture
.

I would like to thank both Neil & Jeff for their spare part service & valuable advise.

Joe, while your working on the tute, could you please make a list of the "little tricks" and share them with us. I always tend to learn things the hard way, usually after breaking something.

Yeah an update on these "little tricks" would be fantastic as apparently I have a leak in my air conditioner that's under the dash somewhere. I got my a/c regassed with the die to find any leaks and none where found under the bonnet but the next day the a/c didn't work anymore and the cabin smelled like gas :-(
