Hey everyone,
Quick question: My climate control/AC LCD display was cracked (black everywhere) and had no backlight, when I bought the car. Luckily, the guy who sold it to me supplied me with an unbroken unit.
This was great. I installed it and its works like a dream BUT there is still no backlight...? I opened the unit up and replaced the 3 globes, only to find that they are the lights for the backlights of the buttons...
Really frustrated after spending almost $30 on those lights when they were fine.
Does anyone what the problem could be? Is it something in the wiring or just a co-incidence that the backlights didn't work on both units?

Most likley a problem with both the units.
An LCDs backlighting comes from the actual LCD display. There is usually a piece of rubber type material that lights up when a voltage is applied.
Perhaps that is faulty, or perhaps the fault is in the power supply.
I am unfamiliar with this exact unit and what it runs on. I presume 5V, try posting in the electrical section. Mark will prob be able to help more than I.

The bulbs backlighting the LCD are shown below:
There is a tutorial on this site which should help you dissasemble the unit to get to this stage, or send it to Mark Paddick to get the bulbs changed for LED's....

Ah, I have now read the tute.
Without doing this conversion I think that the removal of the LCD screen would perhaps be better done by desoldering the pins. I really dont like the idea of cutting the leads.
See the tutorial. Basically you replace some Globes in the rear of the unit. But if all of your backlit globes arnt working, perhaps the problem lies elsewhere.
Pull out the unit. Connect power to the globe connection (for the LCD. If they light up, then problem is further back down the line. Power supply maybe.
Are the button globes powered off the same power supply as the LCD backlighting?
Cost for the display including International freight is US$190 which is about AU$260.
