They conclude that DOT 5 fluids are silicon based, and are not interchangeable with DOT 3, 4 or 5.1 type fluids. We should'nt be using DOT 5 fluids in our Soarers. DOT 5.1 is glycol based and 100% synthetic fluid, it is fully compatible with our braking systems. DOT 5 fluids however are silicon based, and do not absorb water. Moisture buildup in the braking system can lead to hydrolock and ultimately brake failure. DOT 3, 4 and 5.1 fluids absorb moisture and posses anti corrosion properties to offset the possibility of brake system corrosion under long term use of such brake fluid.
Advantages of Super DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 glycol based fluids include; higher dry and wet boiling points and sharper pedal feel due to lower viscosity rating at normal operating and higher than normal operating temperatures.
-- I've been using Castrol Response (Super DOT4) fluid with good results. I replaced clean DOT 3 fluid with the Castrol stuff and noticed the pedal was softer. Only downside is that it needs a flush after 12 months, i can see some discoloration and pedal feel has dropped significantly.

interesting... so, a brake flush with DOT 5.1 in a soarer would be good, but be prepared to do a second flush within a year? (due to contamination from remaining non synthetic dot3/4 fluid?)

I would more think it would lead to the opposite.. bubbles of water would turn to a compressible gas when heated making the brakes squishy. They would also rust from the inside out.
Hey that reminds me, I have a couple of spare brand new Mityvac pumps I have no use for if anyone is interested.
