Just wondering if anyone has ever decided to change the japanese warnings into english so that we don't need to carry that little list around, surely it cant be that difficult for an electrician? Ideas, comments, help, experiences.

Seriously difficult. Just too hard to fit a translator in their, and then you have to feed them.

"...reprogramming the displays..." What do you think you mean by this? What do you imagine would actually happen? If you understand what it is you are trying to say you will begin to understand why it is not quite so easy. [Jeff's answer is wonderfully ironic ]

You need to re- program the ROM that contains the specific display data that is fed into the display drivers for any given fault condition. You need to know what fault condition causes what memory location in the rom to be fed to the display driver. You need to know the pinouts for the display driver so you know what segments to illuminate to create good ol english by reprogramming the ROM with the appropriate 1's and 0's in the memory locations for the specific faults. This is of course a guess at how it would work but is probably close on the money as this would be the simplest method for displaying a fixed list of messages for any given trigger. And now that I have written this it occurs to me that the SC400 should have english so all you may need is the ROM from one of them if you have an equivalent import. Which raises the question about the jzz31 dash??

And Japanese is a 2 byte font as well, another problem to deal with. But go ahead, break a leg and do it. I doubt anyone would pay the $300 or so to have it done. I found the best way is to have no faults with your car, works like magic.

Shows how much attention I pay to the difference between models. As for attempting it, I haven't retired yet so diverting time to it at this point just is not going to happen. It's more something I would tackle as a technical challenge rather than a money making venture, just to see if I cold do it. But I'm not that bored yet! |

If it's a Hitachi 44780 compatible display (probably) then the standard fonts have the katakana (?) characters in the same table as our latin characters, just in the upper 128. I'd give it a 50-50 chance of being reasonably easy to do, but I don't have a spare dash to try it on. Or the time. I do have all the tools though.
