Lots of people have been contacting me asking to write an article on tuning the V8, the most recent was Andy, so I finally got my ass in gear and started collating all the research and posts I've made so far and put them in one place to begin creating the ultimate soarer V8 tuning guide. I have now done this, and version 1.00 of the guide is now published on my website, www.alastair-mcpherson.com Please let me know what you think, feedback is most welcome, especially if you know any areas I've missed, or you would like to contribute in any way to develop the guide further. If you have already bookmarked this website, you may need to press refresh to update the cache and see the new pages. I will also try to get the guide up on TIF. I have tried to reference as many of you as possible who have been either involved in my car or directly or indirectly contributed to the knowledge. To those people I say thank you, and my aim is to give the recognition you deserve. Please inform me if that isn't the case. This is my parting gift to the soarer community, a group of people which adopted me as a friend, a nicer bunch I couldn't have hoped to meet. Cheers, Al

Alastair's emigrating to Oz shortly, so he might be in the market for a Soarer when he arrives, although he was talking about buying an SS Commodore

Site has now been udpated, includes more pics and videos including rare D1 drift soarers in action, plus a buyers guide for soarers (its for the UK, but an interesting read anyway).

Would be good to get a nice guide for the V8, Since they are quite hard to get power out of, especially when ECU/Piggyback Options range from $600 or so upwards to $2000 for a Wolf.

There is quite a lot around, not a lot on actual tuning though. Heres a couple: http://www.v-eight.com/tech_forum/index.php?sid=0022743621f79132610adf6c174a394a http://v8soarer.com/index.shtml

Looks like a good 25rwkw can be had with some sort of engine management, Nice. First logical steps seem to be BFI Exhaust Tune That should net about 175rwkw, but then where to go from there?

chuck in a manual. manual + tuned na v8 = lots of fun. manual tranny should also get rid of the sluggish response. 4.11 LSD would get in there somewhere

Personally, I wouldnt want to do diff gears with a manual. 1st gear is already too short, highway is already to high @3500rpm and im already having to shift into 5th gear at oran park (pretty short straight) with only 147rwkw, standard diff gears and an R154.

R154 fith gear ratio is 0.753:1 Auto 4th gear ratio is 0.705. That makes it about 150rpm increase to do the same speed 100km/hr with the same diff ratio. |

yup, it sucked with an auto and it still sucks with a manual. If my soarer ever gets a decent amount of power, it will be getting a 3.2 rear end at the same time.

stuff a 3.2. responsiveness should be the most important thing in a road car, not top speed

Not sure what you are talking about. 150rpm increase is bugger all and it is close to a perfect ratio. If I went manual I would go for a stock V8 ratio diff in a V8.

Its a personal preference, there will be no real loss in response except for 1st gear and if your putting out 4-500hp thats not going to be an issue anyway. Advandages are less shifting and a proper highway gear. 3rd gear maxing out at ~120 just feels wrong.

Steve you cant have a stock V8 diff ratio as with R154 in 3rd you would not max out rpm at 120km/hr. You should be able to do 150km/hr in 3rd. Likewise you should be doing 2500rpm at 100km/hr not 3500rpm. Auto ratios 1st:2.804 2nd:1.531 3rd:1 4th:0.705 R154 ratios First Gear: 3.250:1 Second Gear: 1.955:1 Third Gear: 1.310:1 Fourth Gear: 1.00:1 Fifth Gear: 0.753:1 |

yep something wrong there Steven... around Wanners i'll get ~120km/h out of the auto 2nd - and thats with a TT 4.08 diff 3rd will take me to the 180km/.h limiter easy

This is dependent on what car the R154 was in ! |

yeah so my memory sux. Got the car back today (i think niall is getting sick of me ) and sure enough 79km/h is 2000rpm in 5th, spot on for 100/2500. I still think its a bit high personally.
