The K&N performed very poorly, didn't it! Makes me wonder how my last 4wd is faring, as I put a K&N on it (it was only a few dollars more than a std paper filter) and it's in a really dusty environment. I suspect it wont get to the 289k kms my Subaru did (which incidentally had a foam filter on it, again, it was only a few $ than the paper filter, and it lasted 5+ years).

The K&N is oiled cotton, the Amsoil & Uni[filter] are oiled foam. The rest are all paper, I believe, take your pick as to the one which is closer to the Toyota paper (hopefully, AC Delco!).
I had an Amsoil on my BMW R80 and an Australian-made filter (foam) on the Subaru, the blue one which I think is off the market and in any case similar to the Unifilter.
I'm going to change mine to the standard Toyota filter at the next service. It has been proven to be as good as any and changing filter once a year is OK by be.

The cost isn't so much of a factor anyway, Benny. On the Tata a paper filter was $110, the K&N $130. On the Soarer a paper filter from NZ was $16, so I'd hardly consider a K&N especially given the stuffing around (the cleaning spray for the Tata K&N used to take my skin off!).

Don, the spray cleaner from K&N is nasty stuff, I suspect alkaline. It certainly cleaned the red oil stuff as awell as the dirt off, just soked it for a while then hosed off. I started wearing rubber gloves after the first time ot two (I had to clean frequently, living on Cape York Peninsula).

I believe TRD is oiled foam, like a Uni, K&N is oiled cotton. I have no idea what the Apexi is made from, as it's not oiled like the others but isn't paper (which is thrown away when clogged). I assume it has to be cleaned somehow either by washing or blowing out with compressed air. The price seems very steep.

I saw a great filter comparo in a hot fours or something that was lying around at work. I'll have a look for it tomorrow and maybe scan the results or something. The drift urethane pod beat about ten other filters for kw increase. And its only $40. I have one on both my cars now. I'll try and post the results up shortly.
