The PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) Valve is a small but important part of your engine. In essence, it is responsible for allowing pressure to escape from the crankcase under controlled conditions. Do a search of the Forum for "PCV" for more detailed explanations.
Over time, the valve will gum up and the springs can weaken, or in extreme cases fail. Seeing as this is a cheap part and a simple fix, it should be high on your list of things to do.
I bought my parts from CMI Toyota, West Terrace Adelaide, where Shaun is very helpful and supplies trade price for SC members.
The PCV is located on top of the passengers rocker cover and is very easy to get at.
I just squeezed the metal clip with my fingers and slid it up the pipe, then gently pulled the pipe off the PCV valve.
I then used a pair of pliers levered against a block of wood to ease the valve out.
Removing the grommet can be tricky as they have most likely gone hard and brittle and there is a fair bit of it below the surface of the hole. I worked a small flat screw driver down the outside of it and then used needle nose pliers to ease it out, even so two pieces came off in the process, but nothing fell into the cavity.
To fit the new one, I eased the new grommet into place, then wet the bottom of the valve with oil and eased is into the grommet.
