Hi Neil,
Could you enlighten us all with which steering wheels will go reasonably straight into a Soarer?
ie. Aristo, SC430 and the like.

Benny,
Hard to explain exactly because of the issues that can be had.
Ie,, Air Bag won't work / possably wrong etc.

I wont be held liable for stating a steering wheel will fit but will also have issues.

AIR BAG is the killer word in this thread :-)

I personally have a JZX100 Wheel on MY Soarer
( With NO Air Bag )

I haven't got an Air Bag now so that's not a problem.

You can replace your current steering wheel with any 1992-2001 Lexus steering wheel and any pre-2001 Lexus air bag. The advantage of this mod is that newer Lexus steering wheels come in three-spoke designs and wood-grain inserts.
Finding the wheel is easy enough, but matching airbags are harder to come by and much pricier.

Note that all 2001+ air bags are dual-stage deployment, which will not work with the SC's single stage system. The exception to the rule is the 2001 RX air bag, which is still a single-stage. Since the wiring harnesses are different on newer air bags, some basic wire splicing is required. Also note that four-spoke wheels between different models of Lexus do vary in size so fitting, for example, an LS400 four-spoke air bag on an ES300 four-spoke wheel will not match up perfectly, or at all. The same goes for three-spoke wheels and air bags. Also note that the gray leather on newer steering wheels looks a lot like the brownish leather on tan interior SCs, but they are not the same color! It's hard to notice by itself, but apparent once installed.

Another steering wheel option is the TRD three-spoke wheel for the Supra, however this is a non air bag model. This is a direct bolt on also, however they only come in black leather with black or colored inserts. No tan or gray is offered.

How do you know whether your airbag is in a working condition?

Also if not, who can fit a working one and how much will it cost (I'm guessing maybe a Lexus dealership)?

Ok, for this test your car can be an American warship and I'll be wrapped in 1.8 tonnes of japanese steel...

Hmm, sounds familiar.

Good thing i bought one from USA with airbag.
Only problem is i cant seem to get the current one off. I have had a good read of the instructions on these forums but there is no philips screw to remove once the 2 plastic covers are off.

Dave,
Why should I over complicate the situation, when examination is best !
One look at the horn pad will tell if it is SRS.

And this is the part that is scary and DANGEROUS.

Im replacing my wheel anyways, airbag or not. I dont trust it !
plus i will have a look at the airbag light. Rod Iseppi has been assisting me a LOT with my car and we will see whats going on.
I believe something VERY dodgy has gone on with the car prior to me buying it.

Where would be a good place to look for steering wheels? I might go for a jzx100 or es300 one in black. I don't have an airbag which makes things easier

importers or wreckers?

The screws are not Philips but Torks, and my good mate Neil tells me that the way to get access is to rotate the wheel till the aperture is at the top

Torx

Buy the right bits, a set is cheap, and do not try to move them with a phillips head.
