Finally the lack of air coming thru my air con vents and the smell got to me . I searched the forum and didnt find too much till I looked in the Soarer forum and found a piccie of the filter area . I pulled out the panel under the glovebox undoing 3 screws down at the bottom of the panel and snapped out the clips at the top and the panel was out .
Lying on the floor and looking up you will see a white plastic housing . this is the evaporator / fan unit .
Under the box if you look up you will see a panel secured by six hex/ #1 phillips screw.

Undo the screws and remove this panel which is actually a flanged plug with a hefty rubber gasket.
Once this is out what you now see is the bottom of the filter and it has a plastic fin about 10 mm deep you can grab onto to remove the filter .

You pull like hell on the fin and pull it towards the back of the car as , unusual for Japanese engineering, the filter is around 300 mm long and 200 mm wide and the gap between the evaporator and the floor at the firewall end is only 60 mm.

So you have to deform the filter by pulling it down , towards the back and towards the left side of the car. Fortunately it is very flexible.

When it comes out it is a 3 part filter. The bottom is twice as thick as the two upper segments.

Just tap the filter in side a plastic bag to get the major crap out. Then thouroughly vacuum it from the non suction side or blow it out with air from the suction side.

I then washed mine in dishwashing detergent, dried it thoroughly and sprayed it with Glenn 20

Putting it back is a pig of a job but you get the idea you have to bend it and force it in.

The result is well worth it

Buckets of fresh cold non smelly air !!!

Good luck !

My aircon smells funky when ever I turn the rear aircon on.

Pulled out the rear filter and it smelt like vomit, that explains the smell.

Its now out airing and I'll be trying the method that Roger did on his front ones.

Nope, only the 1.
Just checked with a mirror and torch.
