I have just bought some Second hand HP design 20 inch wheels. They are 42 offet and 8.5 inch wide all round wearing 245/35/20 rubber. The back seems to fit fine but on full lock the front wheels rub the front inner guard. Has anyone played around with this before and have a good fix?

Three options perhaps - spacers (yech), modify inner guard (depending on where its rubbing, may be difficult) or lower profile tyres (lower than 35 - ouch) - none are ideal I guess.

It doesnt rub on the top it rubs at the front of the wheel arch. I will get the guards lipped today and see how it goes

After fitting the wheels I noticed where the wheels sit there is some kind of control arm coming off the air bags. This controller sits about 2cms above my wheels. Can I drive like this because i assume on bumps my wheels will smack up and hit this

I fit the wheels fine however I had to take out the plastic splash guards. Besides my broken alarm is anything going to suffer ?

From factory the car has 205/65/15's. This gives a rolling diameter of 647mm. Legally you can only increase by 15mm - 662mm. 245/35/20's have a rolling diameter of 679mm, well above the legal limit. If you want 245's on 20's to be legal, they need to run a profile of 30. 215's are the widest you can legally go in 35 profile 20's.

well what tyres should i run on said 20's? do i need to get 225/30's to be legal? will the tyres eliminate the guard rubbing problem?

Depends on your state rules. In WA (and any state under NCOP legislation) the 225/30/20 is perfectly legal without any certificates or inspections. I'm not sure about SA though, I hear they enjoy anally raping those who try to use 20's ? 225/30/20 will eliminate rubbing as long as the offset is around the +40 to +50 mark. Best place a phone call to Trans Dept Tech Section and see what they say about larger rims.

well these rims are 42offset so i guess that will be ok. hrm, well i might look into 225/30's i had the guy at the tyre shop tell me i needed a 245/30 and then it needed to be engineered, i guess that was just him being a typical salesman.

245/30 is legal, but is slightly bigger than stock (rolling diameter wise), so it may cause issues. 225/30 is slightly smaller rolling diameter wise, so will not cause any issues. Remember that with traction control you need to keep the rolling diameter of the front and the rear within a few % of each other, otherwise the traction computer will think you are losing traction.

ill keep the front and back the same. the other thing he was going on about was load rating or something? is there a specific load rating i need to adhere to..?

I'd be worried if a tyre these days is of lower speed or load rating than factory. http://www.tyrepower.com.au/tyre_load.aspx But have a look at that.

I'd say about 1800kg, but I'd be surprised if you'll find 20's with a load rating less than 90.

It will be worth checking the factory ratings, as I'm not sure what the factory came with, and if you are allowed to go less than that. If the factory is 85 or lower, you are fine. If the factory is higher than 85, make a few calls.

ahh buggery. the factory load rating is 89, and it seems that a 225/30/20 tyre with a load rating of 89 or higher is non-existent(unless someone can prove me wrong, in that case ill buy them) i have found 245/30/20 with a 95 load rating so i may have to get those and modify the guard to eliminate the rubbing.

245/30's should fit without rubbing. If it does rub, it should be minimal.

Ok I'll talk from experience since no one else will. When i bought my celsior it had 20s on it. +40 offset 225s running 245/35 rubber. At full lock they rubbed on one side just on the inner guard as you say. Wasn't too major but they weren't new tyres and had already been rubbing for a while, nearly through to the wires actually... Plus they had spacers on them which i'm not sure if they helped matters of fitting under guards or not. That said I had no traction control issues (still lost traction occasionally tho hehe) and they rode very fine and smooth, and my speedo was quite accurate from memory, when i went to 18s it put the speedo out. anyhows. 245/30s should JUST clear the inside plastic guard, but i found it was also the width of the tyre that contributed, so you could probably run a 225/35 and it would still work. But be warned. 20's are bad for celsior suspension, too hard on it, believe me I know. I went back to a set of 18" forged jap racing wheels and they looked better, rode better, LIGHTER, were cheaper and better wearing on tyres and no one thought i was a wannabe gangsta.
