What is your driving history and age, NCB etc?

I pay $1000 a year for my 1JZ cressida, 40 or 50% NCB I forget. Probably not a good comparison as it is a different chassis to your car though.

I'm with Just Car (only mob that would insure me that I could find)

$1060, don't think i get a no claim bonus :-(

Excess's
$450 base excess
$600 age excess
$600 car excess (import)
$400 wheel excess

Grand total of $2050 if I stack and damage my wheels, $1650 if the wheels don't get damaged and $400 if the wheels just get knocked off.

I'm in London, in A TT with all the mod's listed.
35, Firefighter, and trained to drive the fire engine (Advanced Driver.. Woo Woo!)and a full no claims bonus.

One company wanted over a £1k. I went to a company called Sky and now pay £600.

Insurance has been done a zillion times. Like fuel economy (the other common first question) it is obviously highly interesting because we all face it and it can be very expensive. However, if Daniel had chosen Search in the first place, rather than initiating a largely immaterial list of "this is what I have got" then he would have found:
  • The price is not unusual.
  • It is quite likely you can do better.
  • Whom to try and how to go about it.

Briefly, collect names of companies from here and try several of them, every single year you insure and for every single car in your family. Never assume one company is better than the rest, nor that someone else's circumstances are the same as your own, nor that companies are wholly consistent from year to year.
Perhaps Pen should start a special section "My insurance" so everyone can write theirs down whenever they feel like it.

Daniel, try Shannon insurance, tell them you are recommended by your friend and he has got the same car insured with them. I found them very good in premium.

I was out friday night, i'd say a majority of hooners and bad drivers late at night were P platers. During the day thats not always the case, they come out at night, in packs ;)

25 sounds fair don't you think?
About where most of us stop driving with six passengers, stop having the urge to test the limits of ample traction on the freeway, and stop trying to evade cops when we see them do a u-turn a hundred metres away.. etc

Insurance companies work off simple statistics. Under 25, the statistics aren't that good. Shannons are just improving their odds by not insuring in a bad risk age group. But then again, if you are 40 and have had 4 speeding fines in the last few years, don't bother asking for a quote either.

Insurance is just gambling. You are betting the insurance company that you wont damage your car, and, they pretty well always win.

The other thing is that it doesnt seem to matter that much if you have other cars with them if you are with GIO. Being 40, I think I might give GIO a miss and try shannons.

I'm 22 years old and my yearly premium for my TT is $986.00 with a 1200 excess I think. If you haven't had insurance before, it's going to be high no matter what, cose you are younger. When I started off with my insurance it was $1900.00 for a Commodore.

I wish the assholes who keep running into me without insurance leaving me $250 out of pocket (until they finally give in to the threatening letters from my very helpful insurance company) would stop thinking that way. Insurance is not a gamble, its exactly what it is, covering your ass and being responsible to other road users.

Nah, I'm betting that some other bastard without insurance will damage my car - as has happened twice in the last 13 months. With insurance, at least I've only had to recover $500 instead of $2300 (one was $900 damage, the other $1400) and the insurance company has done all the work recovering the money for me, rather than me having to be the nasty chasing the at fault driver for money. Still the first driver left me $250 out of pocket for 3 months, and the second driver still hasn't paid up two months later.

Daniel, here is something interesting to read:
http://soarercentral.com/sc-forum/messages/52956/52957.html?1144307904

To save you any effort at all, I will quote portions of it for you:

quote:

Lurk before posting! We cannot stress this enough.
Read as much as you can before posting ... to see if your issue has already been covered ... Additionally, please check again to see if your post is a repeat issue (it has already been discussed).
Use Search as much as possible before you post what might have been already discussed in detail. Also use the ALSC archive as that has years of excellent, informative and often humorous posts stored away.

My post was polite without being ingratiating and it was helpful, both answering your direct question and distilling useful information from many other posts. So, here is another helpful comment from the above-referenced page:

i pay 350 3rd party fire and theft cover,

not worth payin 20% of the value of the car every year just to insure it in my opinion...

would only cost me 250 if i didnt opt for fire and theft cover.

The general point of insurance is to transfer risk to someone who can afford it more easily, and thus will take a lower premium compared with your own ability to withstand the cost impact.

Despite the jokes, and the fact, that you pay out more than you expect to receive in the ordinary course, insurance is a valid option because it deals with that question of individual vs pooling of risk. However, if you decide that you can afford a total loss (i.e. buy a new car with no recompense) and have taken into account convenience issues which Matthew so well expressed, then 3rd party protection is very sound.

I have done it twice; once in the 80s with an eight-year old car and again with the Soarer in the first six months before I took on the convenience factors. I remain very happy with both decisions, which saved me money.

Saving money by buying only 3rd party means you have a throw-away car. The insurance prices are very high so it is true you have a decision to make but please be aware of the consequences in comparison with your circumstances. If that is OK then in the long term, by not insuring, you will probably, but by no means certainly, be better off. Alternatively, you could be destitute.

Incidentally, the government (State and Federal) does not insure, because it can afford to pay virtually any capital sum and therefore can save money on the premiums.

The capital comes out of your taxes

I think I am feeling discursive at the moment. On to the next item.
