Hey all, I'm not really a new member, didn't know where else to put this post. But just out of interest, I was looking at the site of the dealer where I purchased my 97 vvt-i soarer from, and I noticed he currently has a uzz32 (#867) for sale in his stock if anyone wants to have a look :
http://www.luxuryandperformancevehicles.com.au/lpv/currentstock.htm

*click on "view current stock", and scroll to the second page to find it

Price looks a bit dear, however his cars are usually in very good condition. Not trying to advertise for him in any way, just know how much you guys love the actives.

Given Col was asking over 30K for his when it was sold, 23K isn't bad.

I dropped by and took a look at this today with Steve Howlett.

Car seems okay, bit shonky on some compliance issues. Paint is about 7/10. Interior very dirty. Smokers car. Damaged carpet due to ash burns. Same with hood lining.

Rear seat belts also burned. Most trims seem to be intact. Neither window frame is broken. Very dirty engine. A lot of wear on drivers seat and shifter. Showing 116kms, but given the condition, either it's dodgy or someone showed this one no love at all. Owner says he bought it very cheap at auction in Japan. Better than 750 000yen he tells me!!

Given that he has it listed at 22900 that tells me he bought it VERY cheap. Why? Hmmm....?????

Suspension is sagging badly on the drivers side, but standing up reasonably on passenger side. I didn't start it or run any tests. He tells me that he has a deposit from WA on it?

Also tucked away in there is a 94 black on black active. Number 1855. Worst paint I've ever seen on ANY black Soarer. Needs 5 grands worth of paint plus, plus, plus to bring it back from the dead. Interior showing age but not too bad. More broken trims than the other one. Suspension very sagging and doesn't come up he tells me. Certainly appeared to have issues. Very dirty throughout. Same shonky compliance issues as the other one. He want's $21900 for that one.

Gentlefolk,

Firstly I have not died but have been unwell for many months. I won't bore you with the details but life goes on. Re the above Soarer I am the culprit and need to set a few things straight.

There were 12 examples of the final version of the UZZ32 made between June 1995 and July 1996, no’s 861 to 873. In looking carefully at the auction history I have seen only 2 come up in Japan in the past 2 years. These are one of the rarest production cars Toyota has ever made. It is not a case of choosing the colour and options and waiting for one to arrive. If one comes up at all it is a miracle and from my perspective unless it was crash damaged or has major problems, worth grabbing given that any ten year old Active will need work to bring it up to new condition.

This particular example (867) sold for about four times the price of a good UZZ31 at auction and then had the paint sorted in Japan before being put on the boat. Its interior was auction grade B and after the paintwork was done it came up as a grade 4 car.

At most dealers it would normally be complied, detailed inside and out, the seats recoloured etc and sold for at least $36,000. By some miracle I found the car before it was touched or anyone else noticed it and it was offered to me for $22,900 complied and delivered to my door in Perth. Given that insured Melbourne/Perth door to door car freight is an 1100+ dollar cost that seemed to me to be a more than reasonable price.

I paid a deposit immediately and asked for some specific issues to be covered during compliance, a few days later I received a perfect road-worthiness certificate. It then took over six weeks for me to sort out the finance, imports older than 10 years are getting difficult and I have no regular income. The dealer was offered cash well above his asking price on multiple occasions by around six other punters but waited patiently until I got the money to him. He could have made another 14 grand on the deal by returning my deposit because I had not got my finance sorted and he’d have been legally and ethically fine as the contract gave me two weeks.

I have personally seen many other occasions where people selling cars or houses took the better offer, often in questionable circumstances. Frank genuinely was more concerned about doing the right thing by his customer rather than making a lot more money.

He then sourced a set of the quality leaf pattern OEM floor mats and mudflaps at my request and the car is on its way. He has been absolutely straight with me about every detail and emailed photos of the seats and interior to make sure I knew exactly what I could expect. Personally I think I have got a very rare car for a more than fair price.

I have wanted a final series blue one with a sunroof and all the options for almost four years and now I have one, which frankly is a dead set miracle. I fully expect to spend some time and effort to bring it back to new condition, as it’s a ten-year-old car. I would have no hesitation in recommending this dealer as a place to buy a Soarer. People that put the customer first are worth supporting.

Roger

I am one surprised and happy camper. The arrival date quoted was 15th Feb but 867 arrived on the 31st Jan more than 2 weeks early, thanks TNT. It is now through a series of miracles registered, insured and on the road in less than a day and to my great surprise indecently quick. Either it already has a seriously good aftermarket ECU or it is just a freak engine. As an active it is faster than any stock V8 soarer I have driven. I will investigate further tomorrow.

Despite being fitted with "Hero" brand 225/60/16's it goes around corners ludicrously well although the traction control gets a good workout . I think if I fitted Hero's to a Datsun 120Y it would drift (slowly) but with impressive smoke.

There is no point keeping the UZZ31, it's a lovely car but if I get used to active handling I'll lose it totally driving the 31 first corner I come to.

Its been discussed somewhere I cant quite remember that alot of UZZ32s had a more complexly tuned ECU to be more zippy due to their extra weight/pumps over the 31/30s etc, so acceleration can be very good also - But over time they can get tired due to lack of care and you have a classic sluggish active.. However the odd one or two tend to be much more fresh and alive in a straight line......

I think Don on a call was talking about this? Does this seem familiar Don?

Indeed Mr.beck,
I had hypothesised that since we are aware of at LEAST 3 virginal Actives that went like cut snakes when compared to ANY other STOCK V8 Soarer, Toyota may well have tweaked the 32 ECU's to provide more advance in the timing with commensurately faster acceleration to negate the extra drag from the hydraulic pump & weight........and also I suspect to give the Actives perceivably better acceleration over the "Lesser" UZZ30 & 31's.

But it is purely conjecture on my part

It sounds logical for them to be made quicker due to the extra factors effecting their acceleration... But when you consider the most talked about reason for the UZZ32s only having a total production of 873 is due to their slower straight line performance.... so it makes you think then obviously all actives were generally slower than the "Lesser" () UZZ30's and 31's in a straight line....

Personally Id say these quicker Actives must have had tweaked ECUs in Japan that are an internal enhancement so they appear to be stock from a first glance - Perhaps there could have been a Toyota Option on some Actives to have a tweaked ECU - only for the 32 if the new buyers were willing to spend the extra.... :-)

If some one with an apparent quick off the mark 32 has the ECU's various numbers they may appear to be different if compared to a generally slower actives ECU... You would probably find part CD's would not have a difference to the ECUs as information like this if its even true must be rather scarce - Either that or some random electrical enhancements from a tuner in Japan could be found in the ecu its self - You never know!

You must remember that these things cost a King's ransom when NEW, so I doubt that Toyota would be trying to scrounge a few extra bucks.

The QUICK 32's that I mentioned HAVE had their ECU's inspected, and found to be standard 32 issue.

32's DO have a different ECU from UZZ30 & 31's.

Part numbers can be provided

Well time for an update. UZZ32 number 867 now has a completely rebuilt suspension with all new accumulators, all struts fully rebuilt to new spec's, Valve body resealed, 10 containers (25 litres) double flush of the suspension, VFT bushes everywhere (including the unique active bushes - thanks Andrew and Dan) plus some new OEM ones (large rack bush and rear control arms), new engine and gearbox mounts, full 4 tin type IV transmission flush, filter and pan gasket.

It handled amazingly well when I got it but now it rides better than a limited with fresh air struts and bushes. I think the 4 new OEM accumulators made the most difference along with the VFT bushes. The suspension fluid was so dark green it was almost black but pleasingly, the inside of the valve body was immaculately clean. The solenoid o-rings were squared off and it did sag if left for a few days. Now it does not drop at all and the suspension fluid is as clear as water. Before the flush the transmission fluid looked like used sump oil. On the positive side it has had the full 100k service in Japan along with a new water pump and thermostat etc. The engine oil was also changed regularly from the look of the heads, no varnish and no ticking.

The handling is vice free and seems to defy physics. It has been a bit of an epic so far and without James at Castle Hill it would have been a nightmare.

On to the next stage which is sort the interior and trim (door trims, speaker grills, wood, vents, auto dim rear mirror etc. etc.) along with replacing all the capacitors in the Tuner/TV/EMV and fit all of Vlads's mod's. Then a new OEM air purifier and fix the 2 duff motors in the drivers seat. Also some decent tires, new brake-pads and sunroof, window and door seals, headlights, wiper arms, boot and bonnet struts and a new engine under-tray. After that it will need the paint sorted and the proper OEM pinstripe put back on.

Finally the mystery of why it is so quick for an active. It has a unique (to the last 12 actives) Engine ECU along with sequential injection, a bigger airbox, hot wire AFM and higher compression. The cams are different, the exhaust is very different especially the manifolds, cats and first resonator. It uses 4 heated oxygen sensors plus 2 temperature sensors and has the only Soarer exhaust tips I have ever seen that have no carbon deposits at all. I mean just bare clean metal. It never goes below 12.4 AFR and is a lot less thirsty than I expected. The transmission has a different torque converter, valve body and possibly some changes in the clutch packs.

It is the most fun I've had with my cloths on.

Stephen, yes thanks.

It came earlier this week, apparently Australia Post lost it! Even though it was correctly addressed it went to the wrong distribution center and into the too hard basket. I'm about to slot it into its place in the boot right now. Thanks very much for packing it up properly, it arrived in perfect condition.

I had an express post guaranteed overnight parcel last week from NSW that was beaten to my door by a parcel sent from Tokyo on the same day to NSW and then repackaged and TNT'd to me. Stuffed if I know what Australia Post are doing but its certainly not delivering things on time.

It all worked out well in the end and if I ever need a Bandaid I'm sorted - plus the empty slot is filled.
