Hi guys,

Just bought myself a 91 TT Soarer! Picked it up at a pretty good price (they seem to be sooo cheap these days?!) with a fresh 70,000km 1j dropped in a couple of weeks ago!

The exterior is very clean, it has the UGLIEST BBS mesh 16's :-), interior needs a bit of work (drivers side door handle has all but ripped off), and there are a few things that need doing. The car is completely stock, and all I've done to it is chuck in a stereo that I had lying around the house.

The things that need doing are:
- Drivers side door trim fixed (probably just have to replace)
- a/c unit does not work, seems to be an electrics problem however as I'm told that a second unit was put in and didn't work either
- power mirrors (including that cool button that folds them in!) don't work
- biggest problem - constant whine from engine bay once ignition is on (not started). Stays on while driving and everything too... I'm pretty sure it's the power steering pump, but steering doesn't seem to be affected at all, just get a constant annoying noise!!!

But anyway, thought I'd just introduce myself and say hi, I'm trying to get used to this page and find some solutions to my problems above, but I'm sure I'll get there! I'd put up pics but well, it's a stock soarer... I'm sure you all know what they look like :-)

Anyway, any tips, suggestions would be much appreciated, I've been more of a nissan man lately and only just got back into the soarers when this one came up!

Cheers,
Darren

Darren, the noise won't be the PS pump as that only works when the engine is running. Possibly you have TRC and the Nitrogen accumulator is shot so it's little pump is running continuously. How do the brakes feel?

Brakes are the best I've felt in any car - except they seem to have a point where, if you are braking steadily, they suddenly kick in a lot harder... Doesn't matter how hard you're braking, once you been steadily braking for about 2 seconds, they kick in really hard...

only cost me $6k with the fresh engine already in it (which cost 2k...) is it normal for these to be going this cheap? I'd been keeping an eye on this car for a few weeks and no-one was even looking at it, so I was able to get a good deal! Are they all going that cheap or am I just lucky?

My last soarer I sold about 2 years ago for 12k with front end damage, just seems insane that they've halved in value since then...

Prices have dropped a lot.

To answer your question from email, you need to help us with more information about the noise.

As mentioned, it can't be the PS pump as that isn't running when the engine is stopped.

Put the ignition on and open the bonnet and have a listen to where the noise is actually coming from. If you have Traction Control, there will be a small cylinder just in front of the driver on top of the brake fluid reservoir. This is the accumulator I referred to earlier. It has an electric pump to keep it pressurised, but as the internal Nitrogen charge slowly leaks out, the motor comes on more often, and eventually will be running all the time as it can't make the pressure it wants.

Normally the pump may run briefly at startup, then for a couple of seconds after a couple of uses of the brakes.

The pump is the only thing I can think of that runs with the ignition on and engine off, apart from perhaps the smaller A/C electric fan behind the radiator on a TT.

ha no the burnout wasn't me... My soarer is getting well looked after in its new home :-)
Have a far more powerful silvia for all my silly stuff...

Cheers for the comments and help - have to wait until the weekend before I see my car in the daylight again and can check out where my noise is coming from, but the a/c fan would be most likely I'm thinking...

More problems I've found:
- passenger door central locking doesn't work probably just something small there
- Boot struts are resting in peace... damn boot is so heavy!!!

Darren, the first problem may be this:

http://soarercentral.com/sc-forum/messages/51/7623.html?1124040317

The boot struts can be regassed pretty cheaply and that way you get to keep the nice quality design and materials, or you can get cheap replacements from some auto shops or probably Ebay.
