| They are meant to do it, a wise safety feature. I'm not sure how your would stop it but Im guessing you would pull the fuse for central locking, or disconnect the cable for it in the door panel It would mean you would not have central locking, so have to manually lock both doors went leaving the car. Also in the rare event of a car jacking, some one would be able to open your door with it no longer auto locking!... Just a thought for safety!

What is so bad about it? It's just a safety feature. I don't think anyone has bothered to try and stop it.

The only problem I have with this feature is when I stop and the passenger starts yanking at the door handle, I am worried that someone will break it one day!

Mine learnt to undo the lock before pulling the handle. Though occasionally I get it wrong when I am a passenger.

Later model Soarers don't seem to do it. Maybe there is a component you could upgrade?

Its a mechanism on a lot of Toyota drivers doors that the inside handle simultaneously unlocks and opens the door at the same time. Unfortunately the passengers doesn't do it, but they can always unlock it themselves. I'm not sure about the Soarer, but the Celsior has a lock/unlock button right next to the handle, and also the lock itself is right there. |

To my knowledge non LIMITED soarers don't lock the doors when you put the car in drive. Only GT-L models do.

Nope I don't have it on my GT-TL '96 TT. Then again, mine came with TRC, woodgrain, electric seats, etc. but no LCD rear view mirror and el crapola sun visors? Then again, the Soarer came with about a million combinations of options. Maybe this auto lock was an option?

Or it could be that a previous owner has disabled it. Its only one wire that needs cutting.

what if you sourced out an american driver side door handle mechanism? would that solve the dilemma of unlocking the passenger side door?

Good question, do they have the drivers door unlock thing? It might be easier to look at your drivers door and see if its a simple bracket/tab that needs to be installed to get the lock to actuate at the same time as the handle.

My passenger door handle is broken from this scenario. Serves them right, now they can't get out.

David, i believe that Peter has tried the US spec handle, with no success. the unlock mechanism, might be in the actual lock in the door. not the handle. if you got a us spec drivers side door lock (not just the handle) it might work. just a guess though... Jason.

I used to get annoyed at it, but then i got my Cyclops Alarm/ immobiliser installed. Now it auto locks, and when i turn the car ignition off, the doors automatically unlock couldnt be happier!
